Job description
Overview

A Plymouth based company is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their engineering team. This is a company who offer opportunities for professional development and training in a collaborative environment with exposure to suppliers, clients, and commercial activities. The role involves travel across the UK and internationally to visit suppliers, clients, and project sites. Sustainability is central to this role: you will integrate environmentally friendly materials, energy-efficient designs, and circular economy principles into all projects.

Responsibilities
  • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems using Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Rhino, with a focus on sustainable materials and energy-efficient solutions.
  • Produce detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, and specifications for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Manage and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and production data using MRP 123 software.
  • Collaborate with suppliers to source sustainable materials and optimise environmentally responsible manufacturing processes.
  • Communicate with clients to understand requirements, present design concepts, and incorporate sustainable solutions into final designs.
  • Prepare and assist in generating quotations, reflecting accurate materials, labour, and sustainable design solutions.
  • Perform engineering calculations, tolerance analysis, and feasibility studies to ensure robust, eco-friendly designs.
  • Support prototyping, testing, and validation activities, including analysing test data and implementing sustainable design improvements.
  • Participate in design reviews, implement feedback, and maintain version control of design files.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or another relevant Engineering discipline (or equivalent experience such as HNC/HND).
  • Experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer or similar role.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, and Rhino (essential).
  • Experience using MRP 123 or similar MRP/ERP systems for BOM management.
  • Knowledge of sustainable design principles, environmentally friendly materials, and energy-efficient manufacturing processes.
  • Understanding of sales processes, with experience preparing technical input for enquiries and quotations preferred.
  • Experience liaising with suppliers and clients, with excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel in the UK and internationally.
