Job Title: Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: Milton Keynes (on-site, 5 days per week)

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Join ALTEN, a leading engineering consultancy partnering with some of the UK's most advanced engineering programmes. We are supporting a cutting-edge project requiring the design and development of mechanical enclosures for high-performance electronic systems. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll be working on-site with a forward-thinking engineering team, contributing from initial concept through to validation. This is an opportunity to get hands-on with full-lifecycle design in a highly technical, quality-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead the mechanical design and development of enclosures for complex electronic products.
2. Support the full NPI lifecycle: from initial specifications through to prototyping, verification, and validation.
3. Produce and maintain detailed engineering documentation, drawings, and BOMs.
4. Apply your knowledge of materials, tolerancing, and manufacturing processes to create robust, fit-for-purpose designs.
5. Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration with electrical and systems engineering.

Qualifications

Essential Skills & Experience

• A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• Proven experience in mechanical design within an NPI environment.
• Strong proficiency in SOLIDWORKS (or similar 3D CAD tools).
• Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials selection, and manufacturing techniques (e.g., CNC, injection moulding, sheet metal).
• Ability to generate clear, concise technical documentation and engineering reports.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary team.
