Senior Structural and Thermal Design Engineer

Location: Birmingham

Salary: Competitive

Contract: Permanent

We’re working with a global R&D and engineering firm focused on cutting-edge power electronics systems for electric vehicles, renewable energy, energy storage and rail applications. They are currently looking for a Senior Structural and Thermal Design Engineer to join their growing team in Birmingham.

The Role

This position will play a key part in the structural and thermal design of advanced power semiconductor packages, modules and high-power density converter and inverter systems. You’ll be responsible for end-to-end delivery from concept and simulation to prototyping and testing, contributing directly to innovation in electrified transport and energy solutions.

Responsibilities Include

  • Designing structural and thermal components for power modules and converters
  • Developing advanced cooling methods and heat sink integration
  • Conducting thermal, electro-thermal, thermo-mechanical and CFD simulations
  • Collaborating with systems and control teams to ensure design compatibility
  • Coordinating prototype assembly and performing thermal and reliability testing
  • Supporting patent activity and contributing to technical documentation and publications

What We’re Looking For

  • A background in mechanical or thermal engineering
  • PhD with 3 years’ experience or MSc with 5 years’ experience in relevant design roles
  • Strong knowledge of power semiconductor packaging and cooling technologies
  • Experience working with bonding techniques and thermal interface materials
  • Proficiency in CAD and simulation tools such as Solid Edge, SolidWorks, ANSYS or COMSOL
  • A solid understanding of heat transfer, solid mechanics and fluid dynamics
