Job summary

Wallace Hind Selection in Bedford is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to drive R&D projects from concept through to production, with hands-on involvement on the shop floor and in testing.

You will work on design projects from start to finish, using SolidWorks and applying DfMA principles, BOMs and material selection knowledge to deliver robust machinery.

Qualifications

• HND or B.Eng in Mechanical Engineering.
• Experience on design projects from concept through to completion.
• SolidWorks experience and willingness to learn.
• Experience with production and test (DfMA).
• Materials selection including stainless steel, aluminum and mild steel.

Responsibilities

• Detailed mechanical design of new machines from cradle to grave.
• Re-engineer existing machinery to enhance design, manufacturing efficiency, durability, cost down, GD&T and weights and balance.
• Prototype testing.
• Internal stakeholder management with production and sales.

You're a Mechanical Engineer first and a Design Engineer second. As our new Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll work on R&D projects from concept through to completion, not just in the design office but hands-on with production and machinery testing. You don't want to just sit in front of a computer; you want to broaden your horizons in a smaller business, where you will make a real difference. Based in Bedford, we develop special purpose machinery for a variety of industry sectors.

BASIC SALARY: up to £46,000 dependent on your relevant experience

JOB DESCRIPTION: Mechanical Engineer, Design Engineer - Machinery, Industrial, R&D

Reporting to our Engineering Manager, as a Mechanical Design Engineer you'll be involved with a variety of existing projects from the get-go. Our projects range from existing machinery modifications through to blank page NPD / innovation. Largely low volume.

Rather than being confined to a design office, you'll be encouraged to be shop floor and customer-facing, building on your project experience and working closely with the team on the shop floor in production.

You'll need the ability to juggle several projects (maybe 2-3) at different stages, which will challenge you as a Mechanical Design Engineer. Innovation and quality are at the core of what we do here.

YOUR BACKGROUND: Mechanical Engineer, Design Engineer - Machinery, Industrial, R&D

You'll be an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer, educated to likely have an HND or B.ENG in Mechanical Engineering.

You will also have experience of some or all the following:

• Working on design projects from concept through to completion
• Competent using SolidWorks as your primary 3D modeling package or similar and willing to learn
• Worked closely with production and test (DfMA)
• BOM's, materials selection to include stainless steel, aluminum and mild steel
