Job description

A leading engineering business in the aerospace and defence sector is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team. This role will see you working on complex mechanical systems, ensuring all products meet stringent quality and performance standards.

You will be responsible for 3D and 2D modelling, design to manufacture, material selection, and resolving non-conformance issues. The position offers the opportunity to work closely with engineering, production, and quality teams, contributing to high-profile projects within a secure environment.

£50,000 - Permanent
£50 p/hr - Outside IR35


Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out detailed design activities to meet manufacturing requirements.

  • Conduct root cause and failure mode analysis to resolve non-conformance issues.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement design improvements and corrective actions.

  • Monitor corrective action progress, ensuring timely completion and effectiveness.

  • Provide technical guidance to improve product quality and prevent reoccurrence of issues.

  • Maintain accurate documentation for non-conformance reports and design changes.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across manufacturing processes.

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline.

  • Experience in aerospace and defence, preferably with heavy engineering, power transmission systems, and gear/gearbox design.

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (ideally Solid Edge) for modelling and manufacturing drawings, including GD&T.

  • Knowledge of subsystems impacting mechanical design and structural design methodologies.

  • Strong understanding of quality management systems and standards (AS9100, ISO 9001).

  • Skilled in root cause and failure mode analysis.

  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.

  • Detail-focused with a commitment to quality and continuous improvement.
