Job summary

Brightsmith is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to drive the development of next-generation electrochemical stack hardware. You will design mechanical components, build prototypes and iterate through concept to tested, scalable products.

You will work with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced startup environment, applying CAD, FEA/CFD and engineering calculations to optimise performance and reliability.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design
  • Proven CAD skills with parts, assemblies and drawings
  • Experience taking designs from concept to prototype and testing
  • Strong understanding of design principles, materials, tolerancing and assemblies

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components and assemblies for advanced electrochemical stack technology.
  • Translate concepts and data into practical mechanical designs.
  • Create CAD models, drawings, BOMs and manufacturing docs.
  • Support design optimisation through FEA/CFD and calculations.
  • Develop prototypes, test fixtures and experimental hardware to validate concepts.
  • Iterate through rapid design-build-test cycles to improve performance and reliability.
  • Support stack assembly, testing and failure investigations.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians and suppliers to solve problems.
  • Improve mechanical design processes, standards and documentation as the company scales.
  • Apply modern engineering workflows, automation and AI-enabled tools to accelerate product development.

A pioneering clean energy technology company is developing advanced electrochemical stack technology to accelerate the transition towards sustainable energy solutions. Their work focuses on creating scalable hardware that can support the next generation of cleaner energy technologies.

This is an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to play a key role in developing next-generation hardware, taking concepts from early-stage R&D through to tested, scalable and manufacturable products. You will design mechanical components, develop prototypes, analyse performance, solve complex engineering challenges and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced startup environment.

Key Responsibilities - Mechanical Design Engineer
  • Design mechanical components and assemblies for advanced electrochemical stack technology.
  • Translate laboratory concepts, research findings and performance data into practical mechanical designs.
  • Create CAD models, engineering drawings, BOMs and manufacturing documentation.
  • Support design optimisation through FEA, CFD, engineering calculations and simulation-led approaches.
  • Develop prototypes, test fixtures and experimental hardware to validate concepts.
  • Work through rapid design-build-test cycles to improve product performance and reliability.
  • Support stack assembly, testing, troubleshooting and failure investigations.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technicians and suppliers to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Improve mechanical design processes, standards and documentation as the company scales.
  • Apply modern engineering workflows, automation and AI-enabled tools to accelerate product development.
Experience & Skills - Mechanical Design Engineer
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years' experience developing mechanical products, components or systems.
  • Strong CAD skills with experience designing parts, assemblies and manufacturing drawings.
  • Experience taking designs through concept, prototype, testing and iteration.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, tolerancing and assemblies.
  • Comfortable working hands-on with prototypes, testing and hardware development.
  • Experience working collaboratively across engineering, science and manufacturing teams.
  • Ability to solve complex problems independently within an evolving startup environment.
  • Experience with FEA, CFD, analytical modelling or engineering calculations is beneficial.
  • Experience in electrochemical systems, batteries, fuel cells, hydrogen technologies or similar energy hardware is highly advantageous.
