Job description

Linn Products is an established, thriving, and vibrant Glasgow company at the forefront of designing and manufacturing music systems. Our product range covers the entire audio chain, and we pride ourselves on developing unique engineering solutions that push the boundaries of domestic audio reproduction.

Linn values a collaborative and caring culture, focused on quality, performance, and continuous improvement. We genuinely care about our people and supporting their career development.

Position:

An exciting new role has arisen in our Research and Development department. We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Mechanical and Acoustics Engineering team.

What’s involved?

Reporting to the Mechanical and Acoustics Design team leader, this role has a broad remit. The primary focus will be supporting the development of our iconic LP12 turntable products, along with providing technical expertise and engineering solutions for all aspects of mechanics, from specifying materials to developing novel approaches for vibration control.

The Mechanical Design Engineer must develop a deep understanding of the mechanics of the LP12 to ensure we continue to extract more information from the record groove, minimizing external interference when transcribing the forces captured by the stylus.

Scientific methodology is essential. The candidate should demonstrate a systematic approach to understanding through observation, experimentation, and analysis, forming hypotheses and drawing conclusions through rigorous testing.

All products are designed and manufactured in-house, so the engineer will see products through their entire development cycle—from concept evaluation, through prototyping and manufacturing, to market release.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary R&D department, collaborating with experts in acoustics, electronics, manufacturing, and software engineering. Cross-pollination of ideas is encouraged, and close cooperation with production, service, procurement, marketing, and sales teams is expected.

This is a rare opportunity to join a dynamic team designing and delivering world-class music reproduction systems.

Requirements:
Essential skills:
  • BEng 2:1 minimum in Mechanical Engineering or related Design Engineering with a strong physics background.
  • Experience in 3D CAD modeling, including creating detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • A methodical and scientific approach to problem-solving.
  • Creative thinking skills for conceiving, designing, and testing innovative solutions.
Additional information:

Linn offers a unique, informal, and vibrant culture in a modern setting. We foster a family-like environment focused on performance and continuous improvement, offering rewarding careers driven by a shared passion for music and quality. More about our culture can be seen on our YouTube channel.

We provide a competitive salary and numerous benefits, including:

  • Flexible Working: Encouragement of work-life balance with options for flexible and remote working, depending on role requirements.
  • Holiday Purchase Scheme: Ability to buy up to 2 additional weeks of holiday, repaid through payroll.
  • Workplace Pension: Contributions to a pension scheme with AEGON ARC, with deductions via salary exchange.
  • Private Medical Insurance: Optional cover through Vitality, including advanced cancer cover, mental health, musculoskeletal treatments, and online GP services.
  • Life Assurance: Tax-free lump sum paid to nominated persons if you die while employed.
  • Linn Gym: Onsite gym with classes like boxing and Metafit.
  • Canteen: Subsidized meals, free cereal, porridge, fruit, and occasional BBQs.
  • Charity Involvement: Support for community and charity activities, with opportunities for fundraising and charity nominations.
  • Development Opportunities: Continuous professional development, technical, leadership, and qualification support.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme: Tax-efficient bike purchase program with bike shelter facilities.
  • Staff Discount: Discounted products, interest-free repayment via payroll.
  • Social Events: Biannual staff parties with food, drinks, entertainment, and transport.
