Job description

Mechanical Design Engineer

IONETIC – who are we?

IONETIC is a battery technology start-up based in Brackley, just a few miles from Silverstone—the heart of British motorsport. We specialise in battery pack solutions for low-volume electrified applications, including buses, sports cars, and other vehicles. Our mission is to make electrification both possible and compelling for every vehicle OEM, by providing tailored, cost-effective battery packs with unmatched speed and flexibility.

By integrating proprietary software, mechanical design, and manufacturing technologies, into a single technology stack we call Arc, we deliver custom battery systems that meet a wide range of energy, power, and lifecycle requirements. Our chemistry-agnostic, scalable designs are built to accelerate the journey to net zero for our customers.

Working at IONETIC

IONETIC offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a fast-moving, innovative start-up that is shaping the future of electric mobility. With a strong order pipeline and growing demand for our technology, we’re expanding our team to broaden our capabilities and scale our operations.

As an early-stage employee, you will play a key role in developing the foundational technologies and capabilities that will power the next generation of electric vehicles. Every employee at IONETIC takes on meaningful responsibility and is encouraged to contribute ideas, take initiative, and grow both professionally and personally in a supportive, collaborative environment.

Opportunity

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing and talented engineering team. In this role, you will take ownership of developing battery module designs in both cylindrical and prismatic cell formats, and work on integrated pack solutions tailored to our customers' unique requirements.

You will collaborate closely with our software and manufacturing teams to develop battery architectures that are configurable, scalable, and manufacturable within the IONETIC ecosystem. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you will help shape the core technologies of our battery platform and play a key part in bringing innovative electrification solutions to market.

Responsibilities

  • Design flexible and configurable battery modules using parametric modelling techniques, which are a core part of IONETIC’s product strategy.
  • Develop complete battery pack designs that offer competitive and tailored solutions to meet individual customer requirements.
  • Conduct Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) to proactively identify and mitigate potential design risks.
  • Ensure all designs are optimized for efficient and cost-effective manufacturing, adhering to design-for-manufacture (DFM) principles.
  • Create and manage system and component-level requirements to ensure alignment with customer specifications and project goals.
  • Develop and execute design verification plans to validate performance, safety, and compliance of battery modules and packs.
  • Produce detailed component designs and technical drawings to support prototyping, testing, and manufacturing activities.

Skills and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.
  • At least 2 years of experience in battery design or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency in CAD software—preferably Siemens NX (training can be provided if needed).
  • A solid understanding of systems engineering principles, including the system V.
  • Familiarity with lithium-ion cell performance characteristics and how they influence overall pack concept and design.
  • An interest in the electric vehicle industry and awareness of current battery technologies and market trends.
  • Strong interpersonal and organisational skills, with the confidence and enthusiasm to work in a fast-paced start-up environment.
  • Good computer literacy and the ability to communicate ideas clearly through reports and presentations.
  • A valid UK driving licence or suitable alternative arrangements for local travel.
  • Willingness to travel both within the UK and internationally as required.
