Job summary

Orbitech Recruitment are supporting a Midlands client in Leicestershire to recruit a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer. You will own mechanical designs from concept through to installation and handover, designing bespoke automation and robotic systems.

You will produce 3D CAD models and BOMs, lead design reviews, and work closely with electrical engineers, fitters and project teams, while liaising with customers and ensuring safety compliance.

Qualifications

• Strong mechanical design background in automation, robotics or special purpose machinery.
• 7+ years of design experience.
• Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering.
• Excellent 3D CAD experience with Solid Edge preferred; other CAD tools acceptable.
• Solid understanding of mechanisms, pneumatics and machine design.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of mechanical design projects from concept to build, installation and handover.
• Design bespoke automated machinery and special purpose equipment.
• Produce 3D CAD models, drawings and Bills of Materials.
• Lead design reviews and check design work.
• Collaborate with electrical engineers, fitters and project teams; liaise with customers throughout projects.
• Support machine build, installation and commissioning; ensure safety compliance.

Lead Mechanical Design Engineer

Orbitech Recruitment are supporting a Midlands client with the recruitment of an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer.

Our client designs and builds bespoke automation and robotic systems for industries including automotive, healthcare, medical devices, food, packaging and energy.

The Role

You’ll take ownership of mechanical design projects from initial concept through to build, installation and customer handover.

• Designing bespoke automated machinery and special purpose equipment
• Producing 3D CAD models, drawings and Bills of Materials
• Leading design reviews and checking design work
• Working closely with electrical engineers, fitters and project teams
• Liaising directly with customers throughout projects
• Supporting machine build, installation and troubleshooting
• Ensuring designs meet relevant machinery safety requirements
• Supporting continuous improvement and value engineering

What We’re Looking For

• Strong mechanical design background within automation, robotics or special purpose machinery
• Around 7+ years’ design experience
• Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
• Strong 3D CAD experience — ideally Solid Edge, although SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo or similar will be considered
• Good understanding of mechanical mechanisms, pneumatics and machine design
• Experience taking projects from concept through to delivery
• Comfortable working directly with customers and multidisciplinary engineering teams
• Willingness to travel within the UK
