Job summary

Orion Electrotech, based in West Birmingham, is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer / Product Design Engineer to join a growing product development team within a well‑established UK manufacturing business.

You will lead designs from concept through production, developing robust solutions and bringing products to production readiness. You will collaborate with cross‑functional teams to optimise performance and drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Degree or HND in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design.
• Minimum 4 years’ design engineering experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience designing products for injection moulding; other methods desirable.

Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and product design projects from concept through to manufacture.
• Develop innovative mechanical product designs and bring them to production readiness.
• Apply engineering expertise to optimise product performance, functionality and manufacturability.
• Develop and test prototypes to validate product concepts.
• Conduct engineering calculations, tolerance analyses and technical assessments.
• Utilise testing, simulation and validation methods to ensure product reliability and performance.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver project outcomes.
• Maintain accurate engineering documentation throughout development.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer / Product Design Engineer to join a growing product development team within a well-established UK manufacturing business in West Birmingham. This role offers the chance to play a key part in the design and development of innovative mechanical products, taking projects from initial concept through to production.

Working within a collaborative engineering environment, you will be responsible for developing robust, high-quality solutions that meet customer and market requirements while driving continuous product improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design and product design projects from concept through to manufacture.
• The Mechanical Design Engineer / Product Design Engineer will develop innovative mechanical product designs and bring them to production readiness.
• Apply engineering expertise to optimise product performance, functionality and manufacturability.
• The Mechanical Design Engineer / Product Design Engineer will develop will create and test prototypes to validate product concepts.
• Conduct engineering calculations, tolerance analysis and technical assessments to support design decisions.
• Utilise testing, simulation and validation methods to ensure product reliability and performance.
• Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams to deliver successful project outcomes.
• Maintain accurate engineering documentation throughout the product development process.
• Present technical solutions and project progress to senior stakeholders.

Skills & Experience

• Degree or HND qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design or a related discipline.
• Minimum 4 years' experience in a design engineering role within a manufacturing environment ideally designing Consumer based products or similar
• Strong mechanical engineering or product design background.
• Experience in Solidworks is preferable - open to other 3D CAD software experience
• Experience designing products for injection moulding is essential. Any experience using other manufacturing methods such as Die Casting, sheet metal etc. is desirable
• Proven ability to take products through the full design lifecycle.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Strong communication and presentation abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Exposure to CFD and/or FEA analysis tools would be advantageous.
• Experience with flow control, valves or fluid handling products would be beneficial.
