Mechanical Design Engineer

About the Role

We are urgently seeking to recruit a number of Mechanical Design Engineers, initially on a 6-month contract basis, to be based predominantly on-site at our Ampthill, Bedfordshire offices.

You will be responsible for carrying out duties within the Engineering department, including design, prototyping, design validation, engineering documentation, and supporting calculations.

This role demands a high level of innovative thinking and the ability to synthesize ideas into functioning and manufacturable products that are compliant with design specifications and applicable legislation.

Working within a team of engineers and Design Authorities to design and develop high-integrity components, complex mechanisms, and linkages suitable for challenging military environments.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  1. Develop innovative yet robust design solutions based on requirements specifications and design briefs, ensuring compliance and purposefulness.
  2. Use CREO Parametric CAD to produce concept and detailed designs.
  3. Produce supporting calculations and analyses to justify design decisions.
  4. Collaborate with SMEs, users, and Design Authorities to develop concept design solutions.
  5. Coordinate with a team of Design Engineers to develop integrated sub-system designs.
  6. Work with CAD engineers to produce drawings and design data packs.
  7. Create and present Design Review data packs to Senior Engineers and Governors.
  8. Assist in the production of prototypes and validate designs with manufacturing and purchasing teams.
  9. Conduct physical testing and design validation activities on prototypes.
  10. Ensure components and assemblies adhere to industry and business standards, as well as safety legislation.

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Experience

  • Proven experience in designing and developing mechanical products.
  • Experience within the defence or relevant industry sectors.
  • In-depth knowledge of CREO CAD software and its application in design.
  • Experience with Windchill PDM.
  • Extensive understanding of complex mechanism design principles.
  • Ability to perform basic structural and kinematic calculations.
  • Successful track record of designing for harsh environments.
  • Knowledge of current materials, treatments, and finishing technologies for defence products.
  • Exceptional attention to design detail.
  • Strong planning, scheduling, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
