Job summary

Ingersoll Rand Transport Solutions (IRTS) in Bradford is seeking a Mechanical Design & Development Engineer to design and develop new products for bulk powder and liquid compressors for road transport. You will work on NPD projects, drive value engineering, and ensure designs meet performance, safety and reliability goals.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in engineering, 4+ years in product development or design optimisation, and strong CAD (SolidWorks) and SAP BOM management skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years in product development, cost-down or design optimisation.
  • Experience with rotating equipment or similar mechanical products.
  • Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
  • Clear technical communication and documentation discipline.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new products, systems and sub-assemblies per requirements.
  • Support full NPD lifecycle from concept through validation to industrialisation.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Sourcing, Manufacturing and Quality.
  • Coordinate with suppliers on component design and materials.
  • Ensure smooth handover to manufacturing and supply chain.

About Us

Gardner Denver Transport provides equipment which efficiently transfers bulk material from road tankers and other vehicles. As global requirements advanced, we started developing into wider applications and we now produce equipment for alternative markets including specialised transport, on-board power systems for operating/powering other equipment, and bespoke electric compressor packages for e-mobility vehicles.

Within our Bradford facility we design, machine, assembly and install our entire Bulk Powder and Liquid Compressor range for Road Transport Vehicles.

Job Summary

The Design Engineer is responsible for the design and development of new products, as well as supporting product improvment, value engineering and cost reduction iniatitives across the Ingersoll Rand Transport Solutions (IRTS) product portfolio

Responsibilities
  • New Product Development
  • Design and develop new products, systems, and sub‑assemblies in line with defined product requirements, specifications, and gate reviews.
  • Translate product requirements into robust engineering designs, including concepts, detailed designs, drawings, calculations, and specifications.
  • Support the full NPD lifecycle from concept generation, design, validation, and verification through to industrialisation and launch.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Product Management, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Operations teams to deliver NPD and i2V projects.
  • Support coordination with suppliers on component design, alternative materials, technologies, and manufacturing methods.
  • Ensure smooth handover of solutions into manufacturing and supply chain once validated.
  • Escalate technical issues, risks, or dependencies in a timely manner.
  • Voice of Customer (VoC) & Market Insight
  • Ensure all design and cost‑down solutions maintain or enhance customer value, performance, safety, and reliability.
  • Incorporate Voice of Customer (VoC) insights into both new designs and value engineering initiatives.
Required
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in product development, cost-down, value engineering, or design optimisation
  • Experience with rotating equipment, pneumatic systems, suspension systems, braking systems, commercial vehicles, industrial machinery, or similar mechanical products.
  • Ability to work both independently and within cross-functional teams.
  • Clear technical communication and documentation discipline
Preferred
  • Background in Lean, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), or project management methodologies (PMP/Prince2).
  • Demonstrated ability to transform ideas into commercially viable products.
Key Competencies
  • sound CAD skills including part/assembly design, and detailed drawing generation including GD&T
  • Sounds BOM managment/maintenance skills and interactions with SAP
  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
