Job summary

Penguin Recruitment Ltd is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Birmingham-based building services team. This full-time, permanent role offers the chance to work on diverse building services projects and develop technical expertise.

You will design 2D/3D CAD layouts, cover heating, ventilation, cooling, and domestic systems, and perform Part L calculations to ensure compliance. Training and career progression are supported, with ample exposure to cutting-edge design practices.

Qualifications

  • HNC, HND, or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in building services design within a consultancy or contracting environment.
  • Proficiency in relevant CAD/design software.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Developing 2D and 3D CAD layouts and visuals.
  • Designing mechanical building services, including heating, ventilation, cooling, and domestic systems.
  • Supporting building environmental modelling using industry-standard software.
  • Conducting dynamic thermal simulations and summertime overheating assessments.
  • Completing Part L calculations to ensure compliance with building regulations.
  • Preparing and submitting incoming utility applications.
  • Reviewing low-carbon design solutions and performance specifications.
  • Assisting with technical submissions and preparing design documentation.
  • Collaborating with project installation teams and specialist subcontractors.
  • Supporting commissioning activities and creating commissioning plans.
  • Reviewing designs produced by internal and external teams for accuracy and compliance.
  • Providing technical support throughout the project lifecycle.

Responsibilities

Day-to-Day

Your daily activities will include:

  • Producing detailed CAD drawings and technical documentation.
  • Conducting simulations and calculations to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Reviewing and optimizing designs to incorporate low-carbon and energy-efficient solutions.
  • Providing technical support during the installation and commissioning phases of projects.
Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who are confident, proactive, and capable of working both independently and as part of a team. The ideal candidate will have:

  • HNC, HND, or Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, or a related field.
