Job summary

Ysgol Antur Cwm is seeking an English & Maths Tutor to deliver focused sessions for pupils aged 11–16 with SEMH needs. The role is predominantly school-based, with structured pathways guiding pupil progression and a creative approach to teaching.

£17,297 per annum, pro rata from a full time equivalent salary of £30,750

This isn't your typical classroom teaching role.

At Ysgol Antur Cwm, we work with boys aged 11 to 16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. Many of our pupils have experienced significant disruption to their education and may arrive with gaps in their English and Maths, low confidence in their academic ability or a history of disengagement from traditional classroom learning.

We are looking for an English & Maths Tutor to take a leading role in the delivery of focused academic learning within our school.

Unlike many of our roles, this position is predominantly school based. Pupils will attend planned English and Maths sessions with you, allowing you to provide consistent, structured teaching while building strong individual relationships.

Our approach is based around understanding exactly where each pupil is academically and giving them a clear route forward.

We baseline pupils to establish their current ability and use structured learning pathways to identify what they need to learn next. Your role will be to turn that pathway into engaging teaching, monitor progress and help each pupil move forward at an appropriate pace.

The Role

You will take day to day responsibility for planning, preparing and delivering English and Maths teaching to pupils attending Ysgol Antur Cwm.

Our pupils generally receive highly individualised support, meaning teaching can be adapted around the ability, interests, confidence and learning needs of the young person in front of you.

You will use baseline assessment information and our developing English and Maths learning pathways to understand each pupil's starting point, identify their next learning objectives and plan teaching that moves them progressively towards their longer term academic goals.

This is not simply a role where worksheets or pre prepared lessons are handed to you.

We want someone who can take ownership of the curriculum, think proactively about what each pupil needs next and develop engaging ways of teaching it.

You will have freedom to be creative in how learning is delivered. For one pupil, percentages might make more sense through budgeting and money. Another may engage with reading through something connected to mechanics, sport or a personal interest.

What You'll Be Doing

• Plan, prepare and deliver high quality English and Maths teaching.

• Follow structured English and Maths learning pathways to identify appropriate next steps.
• Take ownership of curriculum planning and progression within your subject areas.
• Adapt teaching to individual ability, learning needs and interests.
• Deliver focused individual and small scale teaching sessions within the school.
• Develop engaging resources and activities that make English and Maths relevant to pupils who may previously have disengaged from academic learning.
• Monitor pupil progress and identify where additional intervention or a different teaching approach may be required.
• Regularly assess whether pupils are secure in their current learning before progressing them to the next stage.
• Record teaching, progress and evidence accurately using the school's digital systems.
• Use InsightED and other educational technology confidently as part of planning, assessment and evidence recording.
• Work alongside school staff to ensure academic learning complements pupils' wider vocational and practical curriculum.
• Contribute to progress reports, IDP reviews and other pupil reviews where appropriate.
• Identify opportunities to improve our English and Maths curriculum, resources and learning pathways.
• Maintain high expectations while recognising the individual needs and starting points of our pupils.
• Carry out any other reasonable duties required to support the effective running of the school.

About You

We are not necessarily looking for someone who has spent their entire career teaching in a conventional classroom.

We are looking for someone who understands how children learn, can recognise gaps in knowledge and can build learning progressively from a pupil's actual starting point.

You will need to be organised enough to provide structure but creative enough to recognise when the traditional way of teaching something simply isn't working.

Technology is also an important part of how we operate.

Our school uses its own digital platform to manage planning, assessment, pupil progress and learning evidence. You do not need experience with our particular system, but you must be comfortable using technology and willing to learn new digital tools quickly.

Most importantly, you will need the patience and resilience to work successfully with young people with SEMH needs.

Some pupils may have had very negative experiences of English, Maths or education generally. Building trust and confidence can therefore be just as important as the lesson itself.

• Be able to plan structured learning from an individual pupil's starting point.
• Understand how to identify gaps in knowledge and break learning into achievable steps.
• Be creative in adapting teaching for pupils who do not respond well to conventional classroom approaches.
• Be confident using technology and digital educational systems.
• Be proactive and able to take ownership of their area rather than waiting to be told what to do next.
• Have excellent communication and relationship building skills.
• Be patient, calm and resilient when working with pupils who may become disengaged or dysregulated.
• Be organised and able to maintain accurate records of planning, assessment and progress.
• Have high expectations for pupils while understanding that progress will look different for each individual.
• Work positively as part of a wider multidisciplinary school team.
• Experience working with pupils with SEMH, ALN, SEND, alternative provision or pupils who have experienced significant educational disengagement would be highly advantageous.
• A recognised teaching or tutoring qualification would also be advantageous, although we are particularly interested in applicants who can demonstrate strong subject knowledge, effective teaching ability and experience of helping young people make measurable academic progress.
