Responsibilities
  • Assist with the admission, orientation and discharge of women and their babies in accordance with local policy and guidance.
  • Ensure that all clinical documentation is accurately collected, updated, stored and filed in accordance with local information governance and record keeping policy and guidance.
  • Work closely with administrative staff to provide additional support to the service as required.
  • Participate in tracking, obtaining and filing clinical records as required, under instruction and in line with local policy and guidance.
  • Provide administrative support to the maternity team.
  • Manage own time effectively whilst prioritising care needs for women and their babies under care under the direction of the midwife.
  • Act reliably; relay messages to the appropriate person in an effective and timely manner, whilst maintaining women's confidentiality.
  • Convey an approachable and professional attitude to all mothers and their families.
  • Communicate effectively with women and their families in all settings, with particular attention to providing updates on any delays or changes to their care.
  • Ensure knowledge of local safeguarding policy and procedure is maintained.
  • Ensure the working order of equipment, reporting any concerns, faults or breakages in a timely manner.
  • Report incidents or concerns using the local risk management system, escalating appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Successfully complete the 'care certificate' competency booklet within the first six months of employment and identify training needs to undertake appropriate training/education as required.
  • Be aware of professional limitations and develop practice through reflection, mentorship and appraisal.
  • Attend all statutory and mandatory training as required and participate in annual performance reviews.
  • Be conversant with local infection control policy and adhere to mandates.
  • Work safely in line with health and safety policies and guidance.
  • Participate in audits of standards within the unit where appropriate.
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Receive details of daily duties from the midwife and prioritise care under supervision.
  • Undertake routine observations (and escalate deviations) to the named midwife or appropriate team member.
  • Support women during clinical procedures and attend to personal hygiene needs as necessary.
  • Assist/act as a runner in obstetric theatres and provide support to labouring women under supervision.
  • Support women in their infant feeding choices and provide evidence-based support for breastfeeding.
  • Support and assist with artificial feeding in line with policy and guidance.
  • Identify and report abnormal events or emergencies promptly to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Perform venepuncture in line with local policy and guidance following competency.
  • Assist with transportation of blood products and maintain stock in line with storage requirements.
  • Assist in bladder care, remove catheters and dispose of equipment following infection control policy and document fluid balance.
  • Undertake neonatal observations under supervision and escalate deviations promptly.
  • Observe newborn wellbeing and escalate concerns to the midwife or team.
  • Provide practical support to new parents while promoting safety in hospital and home settings.
  • Act as chaperone when requested and escort women and families between clinical areas as required.
  • Undertake newborn blood spot screening when directed and ensure consent is gained from mother prior to the procedure.
  • Complete relevant documentation for screening tests and assist with other required tests as directed by the midwife.
  • Assist with mobilisation after surgical procedures and remove dressings or cannulas under direction.
  • Assist with nutrition and hydration needs of women and support public health information delivery.
  • Assist the midwife in delivering care and signpost to local and national services.
  • Ensure cleanliness of equipment and prepare birthing environments; maintain stock levels and escalate depletion as needed.
