Job description

Job Summary

Would you like to work in a highly motivated and friendly Maternity vaccination team covering Bath, North East Somerset, and West Wiltshire? This is an exciting opportunity to join a new service, where you will work as part of a dynamic team delivering a safe and effective vaccination service for pregnant people across multiple sites within the remit of Royal United Hospital Bath NHS Trust services.

We are looking for nurse/midwives with an interest in Public Health who are keen to work with us to ensure we have a universal offer in place for vaccinations given within maternity services. Leading on the vaccination service for influenza, COVID-19, pertussis vaccinations in pregnancy, and the BCG vaccination for newborns, they will in future support the roll-out of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) vaccination programme.

Rated 'Outstanding' in our latest CQC review, our service includes an acute unit, two standalone birth centres, two community midwifery-led hubs, a 24-hour Maternity Assessment Unit, and plans for an alongside midwifery unit at the RUH site.

If you are a nurse or midwife who would like to be part of our future and can meet this challenge, we welcome your interest in applying for this vacancy. This is your chance to be part of a transforming organization, and we look forward to working with you to develop this service to a high standard.

Main Duties of the Job
  1. Observe the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of professional standards that nurses, midwives, and nursing associates must uphold to be registered to practice.
  2. Be competent in all aspects of immunisation, including knowledge of contraindications to specific vaccines and the recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis.
  3. Commit to providing non-discriminatory and non-judgemental care.
  4. Perform robust health pre-assessments, including but not limited to previous reactions to vaccination and immunisation history.
  5. Address any concerns and ensure consent and clinical assessment are completed and recorded within maternity records prior to vaccination.
  6. Escalate concerns where necessary to appropriate healthcare professionals for further advice and support.
  7. Take responsibility for the safe custody and administration of drugs in accordance with Trust policies and statutory regulations.
  8. Record vaccine batch numbers accurately in patient records, including hand-held notes, electronic records, and national databases.
  9. Be flexible to adapt and develop practice based on reflection, research, and audit outcomes.
  10. Attend NHS England immunisation meetings and stay updated with best practices.
