Materials Scientist

About the job

RHI Magnesita has an exciting opportunity for a Materials Scientist, on-site in York, PA.

The Materials Scientist supports R&D, HSE, and QC through physical and chemical analysis testing. Responsibilities include maintaining, calibrating, and operating analytical lab equipment related to refractory ceramics (such as XRF, XRD, SEM, TGA, Dilatometer, etc.), developing the lab with future analyses, and acting as the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Radiation Safety Officer. They will develop lab SOPs, contribute to testing standards, manage project work, and communicate effectively with Engineering, Sales, and Marketing teams.

The tasks will include:
  1. Testing raw materials and finished products to support R&D activities using laboratory equipment.
  2. Maintaining, calibrating, troubleshooting, and operating analytical lab equipment (XRF, XRD, SEM/EDS, TGA, Dilatometer, laser diffraction particle size analyzer, etc.).
  3. Analyzing mineral raw materials and refractory ceramic products, and communicating results with R&D Research Engineers.
  4. Collaborating with equipment suppliers for technical support.
  5. Handling chemicals safely in the lab.
  6. Serving as the Chemical Hygiene Officer and Radiation Safety Officer.
  7. Harmonizing testing methods across RHIM labs.
  8. Running control samples for calibrated equipment.
  9. Leading improvement projects in the lab.
  10. Developing testing procedures, writing SOPs, and ensuring compliance.
  11. Testing raw materials or prototypes and reporting results systematically.
  12. Staying current with testing technologies and training.
  13. Performing other team tasks as needed.
About you
  • Bachelor's degree in Ceramic Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Geology, or related physical sciences with at least 2 years of chemistry coursework.
  • 3-5 years of laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Understanding of mineral phases and inorganic chemistry.
  • Knowledge of lab safety and chemical disposal practices.
  • Ability to follow and develop methods and procedures.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Experience with equipment like XRF, XRD, SEM, TGA, Laser Diffraction, CS Analyzer, Dilatometer.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, capable of working independently or in teams.
  • Proficiency in analytical testing and reporting results.
  • Computer skills: Advanced in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
