Materials Scientist

Location: RG7 4PR, between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.

Package: £38,020 - £57,020 (dependent on suitability, qualifications, and experience)

Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. Flexible working requests are considered—please specify your preference in your application.

Role Overview

AWE is recruiting a Materials Scientist for our Materials and Analytical Science Group. The role involves managing our Strategic Materials portfolio to align material use with our strategic objectives, overseeing material supply and storage, and engaging with operational teams to meet programme needs.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Critically analyze the lifecycle use of materials in facilities.
  2. Own the material supply and storage strategy, aligning with corporate and DNO strategies.
  3. Develop and coordinate a programme for material supply and storage over the next five years and beyond.
  4. Establish relationships within UK industry, academia, and international partners.
  5. Identify capability gaps with stakeholders.
  6. Assign tasks to delivery managers and movement control leads.
  7. Develop metrics to monitor material supply health.
  8. Provide scientific guidance on material storage and supply.
  9. Report progress and resource needs to senior leadership.
Candidate Profile

We are interested in candidates with:

  • A STEM degree, NVQ/ONC/HNC, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in Science or Manufacturing environments.
  • Knowledge of health & safety legislation, environmental regulations, and relevant legislation.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience with Strategic Materials.
  • Technical leadership abilities.
  • Stakeholder management skills.
  • Innovative mindset and commitment to quality.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
