For many fans of Formula One, the sport exists between lights and chequered flag on a Sunday afternoon. It begins and ends with the exploits of the drivers on the track. But this is merely the tip of the spear. The reality of modern F1 is that of a complex and intertwined operation, every part of which needs to perform near its limit if success is to be achieved. From the pit crew searching for the ultimate repeatable pit stop, to the inspiration of the designers, the application of engineers and the herculean efforts of an army of fabricators and machinists. Much of our success is thanks to the diversity of thought and spectrum of skill sets held within the team, our ability to recognise unique contributions from individual team members is just a part of why we love what we do.

Job Description

Join Red Bull Powertrains as a Materials Engineer and be part of a team pushing the limits of innovation and performance in Formula 1 power unit technology. If you're a passionate engineer, problem-solver, or technical expert, this is your chance to help shape the future of motorsport at the highest level. Are you ready for the challenge?

The role will focus on the following areas:
Working from our Milton Keynes factory you will be integrated within the Material and Battery Engineering Group of Red Bull Powertrains. Your role will be to support the ICE, ERS and ESS areas of the Powertrain working closely with other areas of the business including Design, Quality, Purchasing and Performance to deliver a race and championship winning Power Unit. With the opportunity to be involved in multiple areas of the Power Unit, a broad experience across different fields of Materials Engineering such as Metallic, Polymeric, Elastomeric and Composite materials is advantageous as well as knowledge of material processing such as manufacturing methods, heat treatment and surface treatment of materials and components.

Key competencies:
• Knowledge of the operation of standard metallurgical equipment.
• Experience of material property testing and interpretation of the results
• Ability to work as part of a team as well as individually
• Practical hands-on approach with ability to self-manage workload and priorities when necessary.
• Ability to build and develop the processes, skills and capabilities of the department
• Eagerness to learn and push experience beyond current knowledge levels.
• Evidenced experience of complex decision making and strategic thinking when faced with imperfect data and challenging timelines.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to foster strong cross-departmental relationships.
• Willingness to adapt to the challenge of a fast paced, technically challenging environment.

Red Bull Powertrains is looking for a passionate and skilled Materials Engineer to play a key role in the development of our championship-winning F1 hybrid power unit. The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Materials Science or Materials Engineering (or equivalent) and bring hands-on experience from high-performance R&D environments, ideally with exposure to short lead-time projects. In-depth knowledge of F1 hybrid power unit materials is a strong advantage, but a deep understanding of material failure mechanisms, heat and surface treatments, and the ability to write control specifications and audit suppliers is essential. You'll take a methodical approach to problem-solving, be confident in technical report writing, and capable of turning data into clear, decisive actions. If you're ready to contribute to a world-class engineering team and help push the boundaries of performance, we want to hear from you.

At Red Bull Powertrains, we push the limits, fight for every victory, and get things done with relentless focus. Joining us means being part of a high-performance team that thrives on collaboration, trust, and ambition. We celebrate wins, learn from challenges, and take our work seriously—but not ourselves. Alongside a competitive salary, you’ll enjoy:

Most importantly, you’ll play a key role in powering championship-winning cars. If you're ready to be part of something extraordinary, apply now and help shape the future of F1.
