About the role

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Materials Deputy Technical Manager to join our Major Projects team .

Role purpose: To support the continued maintenance of the UKAS Accreditation of the Materials Department including Major Projects and other business units including staff competence, updating documents, scheduling assessments and commercial management of department.

This role is to cover mainly the laboratories across the South and East of England.

What you'll be doing

The successful candidate will have the following key accountabilities:

• Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm through all aspects of materials testing activities and continue to lead industry in safe methods of work and best practice;
• Support the delivery of the company’s sustainability activities including identification of alternative materials and enabling trials to prove acceptability;
• Maintain UKAS accreditation for laboratory testing through maintenance of Quality System and levels of competency within the team;
• Support the Annual Quality review to influence future direction of laboratory services and maintain continual improvement within the department;
• Schedule, organise and maintain departments Interlaboratory competence testing requirements and analyse results;
• Identify productivity improvements and/or efficiencies within the laboratory facilities;
• Provide technical support to tenders when required, including scope identification and producing budgets for review;
• Maintain the Materials Department Business Management Systems document publications;
• Support Materials SLT in materials risk management and carry out an assurance on projects, identifying best practice, areas for improvement and areas of concern;
• Identify and undertake analysis on changes in specifications and standards related to scope of accreditation.

Who we're looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Degree qualified or have relevant professional experience in Materials Engineering or Laboratory Management to ISO 17025;

  • UKAS Trained in Auditing and Managing Quality Systems;

  • NVQ in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities Level 3 (as a minimum);

  • Hold a valid CSCS card;

  • Proactive in managing underperformance and following processes;

  • Experience in managing large laboratory teams or across multiple locations;

  • Positive interpersonal and communication skills, working well under pressure and able deliver to set deadlines;

  • Strong IT skills;

  • Full driving licence.
