About the role

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Materials Deputy Technical Manager to join our Major Projects team.

Role purpose

To support the continued maintenance of the UKAS Accreditation of the Materials Department, including Major Projects and other business units, staff competence, document updates, assessment scheduling, and departmental commercial management.

This role primarily covers laboratories across the South and East of England.

What you'll be doing

The successful candidate will have the following key accountabilities:

  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm through all aspects of materials testing activities, leading industry in safe methods of work and best practices.
  • Support the delivery of the company’s sustainability initiatives, including identifying alternative materials and enabling trials.
  • Maintain UKAS accreditation for laboratory testing through quality system management and team competency levels.
  • Support the Annual Quality review to influence future laboratory services and promote continuous improvement.
  • Schedule and organize interlaboratory competence testing and analyze results.
  • Identify productivity improvements and efficiencies within laboratory facilities.
  • Provide technical support for tenders, including scope definition and budget preparation.
  • Maintain documentation for Materials Department Business Management Systems.
  • Support Materials SLT in risk management, project assurance, and best practice identification.
  • Analyze changes in specifications and standards related to accreditation scope.
Who we're looking for

The following qualities and experience are essential:

  • Degree qualified or relevant professional experience in Materials Engineering or Laboratory Management to ISO 17025.
  • UKAS Trained in Auditing and Quality Systems Management.
  • NVQ Level 3 in Laboratory and Technical Activities or higher.
  • Valid CSCS card.
  • Proactive in managing underperformance and following processes.
  • Experience managing large laboratory teams or multiple locations.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication skills, and ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Full driving licence.
