The Materials Data Scientist, will support Arabelle Solutions Engineering Designers and the Materials Group with specialist materials knowledge of the modelling of material performance and behaviour, the statistical assessment of data for safe design practice, and the curation of data in a dedicated integrated tool. You will be part of a team and will provide specialist support, in a context of ensuring design risk management, and maintaining conformity to design intent, codes, standards and quality.

The Materials Data Scientist, will support Arabelle Solutions Engineering Designers and the Materials Group with specialist materials knowledge of the modelling of material performance and behaviour, the statistical assessment of data for safe design practice, and the curation of data in a dedicated integrated tool. You will be part of a team and will provide specialist support, in a context of ensuring design risk management, and maintaining conformity to design intent, codes, standards and quality.

As a Materials Data Scientist you are responsible for the current materials database and ensure correct application in design tools. You will develop and curate mathematical models of material performance for a range of properties ensuring the material design properties are maintained in accordance with appropriate guidelines and codes. In addition you will develop appropriate testing protocols for the generation of material data for a range of methods. E.g. mechanical testing and corrosion.

Other Responsibilities include;

  • Provide materials data support Design Engineering and Services Engineering.
  • Curate the material database.
  • Ensure alignment of data analysis with standards appropriate to the nuclear industry.
  • Support review of technical reports.
  • Maintain positive interfaces with other technical disciplines.
  • Maintain positive interfaces with projects in Products and Services.
  • Provide feedback experience to the group (feedback meetings with suppliers and internal, feedback reports)

Within this role you will be working on projects with UK Defence customers which will require any individual applying for the role to hold or be capable of getting SC Level clearance. We will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not have it. Due to the nature of the work an individual is required to be a UK National (as approved by the MOD). Dual passport holders are acceptable if the second country is approved by the vetting authority.

Qualifications and Experience

  • BEng / BSc in Materials Engineering or similar (post graduate qualifications are desirable)
  • The ideal candidate will have direct experience of the analysis of material performance data and understand the influence of service environment on the change in properties.
  • An understanding of the testing procedures for material performance and related standards is necessary.
  • A understanding of statistical testing of material data is essential.
  • An understanding of the processing and metallurgy of steels is a particular benefit.
