Job Overview

We are looking for a practitioner that is highly driven and passionate about safeguarding children. This is a really exciting opportunity where the postholder will be working in a dual role of both a MASH Health Practitioner and Safeguarding Children Advisor.

This will incorporate working as part of the MASH dynamic multi-agency integrated team assessing notifications and referrals received regarding children aged 0-18 as well as attendance at multi-agency strategy meetings. This will include searching for and collating health information from a range of NHS providers both locally and further afield.

We are looking for a practitioner that is highly driven and passionate about safeguarding children. This is a really exciting opportunity where the postholder will be working in a dual role of both a MASH Health Practitioner and Safeguarding Children Advisor.

This will incorporate working as part of the MASH dynamic multi-agency integrated team assessing notifications and referrals received regarding children aged 0-18 as well as attendance at multi-agency strategy meetings. This will include searching for and collating health information from a range of NHS providers both locally and further afield.

The post holder will be an integral member of the safeguarding children team and will support with the arrangements for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and their families in the Harrow 0-19 service. This will include the provision of specialist safeguarding children advice and support to staff to promote good professional practice in safeguarding children and the delivery of supervision and training to all levels of staff in the Harrow 0-19 service. In collaboration with the Named Nurse, contribute to the development and review of policies and procedures and take part in audit and other initiatives. Deputise for the Named Nurse as required.

The postholder will share information with due regard to patient confidentiality, interpreting and sharing the information that is necessary to safeguard and/or promote the welfare of a child.

Main duties of the job

To work with the named professionals, clinical governance team, service managers and operational directors to identify any areas of risk for the Trust regarding safeguarding children and contribute to managing and reducing those risks.

Contribute to the collection, reporting and presentation of data relating to safeguarding children activity across the Harrow 0-19 service.

To evaluate and review safeguarding practice across Harrow 0-19 service and ensure that staff have knowledge of and are able to utilise current local/National policies and guidance.

To contribute to the review and implementation of Trust standards and policies relating to safeguarding children.

In collaboration with the named professionals conduct audits to evaluate safeguarding children practice and contribute to the annual Harrow 0-19 service audit plan.

To monitor that recommendations of all internal audits, serious case reviews, inspections and statutory and other guidance are incorporated into changes in practice.

Consider the findings of relevant published research studies and summarise the key findings for distribution to relevant commissioners, health staff and other agencies as appropriate.

To initiate and participate in relevant research and keep up to date with evidence based practice.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Functional Responsibilities:

Contribute to performance improvement of the MASH taking the lead for health-related issues and for other identified areas where agreed by the team

Provide coordination of and participate in relevant internal and external working groups and provide advice, expertise and support where requested

Provide relevant and timely advice and reports on the function of the MASH to the named professionals, for inclusion in Safeguarding Children Partnership Reports

Undertake audit when required

Work with members of the MASH Team to investigate the causes of any variance in MASH activity and proactively contribute to the implementation of solutions.

Proactively participate to identify risks and issues with regards to the functions of the integrated team to facilitate resolution and/or escalation processes.

Provide Safeguarding Supervision to staff within the Harrow Children Services

Provide Safeguarding advice to staff

Education And Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • NMC Registered Nurse (Adult / Child / Mental Health / Learning Disability)
  • Qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor and School Nurse) qualification

Desirable criteria

  • Completed Safeguarding Supervision training

Knowledge, Training and Experience

Essential criteria

  • Significant experience of working in the community
  • Significant experience of successfully operating in a politically sensitive environment
  • Demonstrated experience of co-working in complex and challenging environments
  • Experience of managing risks and reporting and escalating concerns
  • Experience of holding child protection case load
  • Understanding of the public sector
  • Understanding of the wider healthcare environment
  • Good understanding of IT and community recording systems
  • Sound knowledge of NHS safeguarding structure.
  • Sound knowledge of multi-agency working (children and families)
  • Sound knowledge of legislation and policy
  • Experience of assessing risk and need for children

Desirable criteria

  • Post-graduate master’s degree in a relevant subject area or working towards
  • Educated to degree level in a related child protection subject
  • Evidence of continued professional development in safeguarding children to level 4

  • Ability to prepare and produce concise yet insightful communications for dissemination to partners from a broad range agencies, disciplines and services

  • Numerate and able to understand complex data combined with good analytical skills
