The Opportunity:

This is a significant opportunity for an experienced and strategic Marketing & Communications Manager to join the leadership team at The National Museum of Computing. You will be instrumental in shaping our external presence, driving engagement, and increasing visitor numbers through the development and execution of innovative marketing and communications strategies. This fully in-person role, reporting directly to the Museum Director, requires a proactive individual with a proven track record of success in developing and delivering impactful campaigns, particularly within the events sector. You will be expected to work some weekends to support key museum activities and events.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive Marketing & Communications Strategy aligned with the museum’s vision and overall objectives.
  • Lead the strategic development and marketing of the museum’s programme of special events, Bytes Festivals, lectures, and talks (primarily in-person), ensuring maximum engagement and revenue generation.
  • Oversee all aspects of the museum’s brand identity, ensuring consistent and impactful messaging across all online and offline channels.
  • Conceptualise, develop, and execute integrated, multi-channel marketing campaigns that effectively reach target audiences and achieve measurable results.
  • Identify, analyse, and engage with target audiences, developing tailored communication strategies to foster long-term relationships and increase visitor numbers.
  • Direct the museum’s digital presence, including website management, social media strategy, and email marketing, ensuring engaging content and optimal performance.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including press, cultural partners, and community organisations.
  • Effectively manage the marketing and communications budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and demonstrable return on investment.
  • Monitor, analyse, and report on the effectiveness of marketing and communications activities, using data to inform future strategies and optimise performance.
  • Work closely with colleagues across all departments to ensure cohesive and integrated marketing efforts.
  • A passion for creating narratives that resonate with audiences and capture the essence of the museum's collections and exhibits is essential.
  • Be available and willing to work some weekends to support museum events and operational needs.

Person Specification:

  • Degree in Marketing and communications CIM Qualification
  • You must be able to work on-site at The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park.
  • You will have a willingness and ability to work some weekends and occasional evenings as required to support museum events.
  • You have a high level of proficiency in relevant IT tools and software.

Essential skills and experience:

  • You will should have substantial and demonstrable experience (5+ years) in marketing and communications role, with a strong emphasis on events marketing and development.
  • You have a proven ability to develop and implement successful, data-driven marketing and communications strategies.
  • You have a deep understanding of event marketing principles and best practices, with a track record of driving attendance and engagement for in-person events.
  • You have advanced knowledge of digital marketing channels, including website management, SEO, social media marketing, and email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp).
  • You have excellent ability to create compelling and engaging content across various formats.
  • You have exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • You have a proven ability to build and maintain strong relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • You have Excellent organisational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • You have strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and translate insights into actionable strategies.
  • Experience working within the museum, heritage, or cultural sector.
  • Established relationships with relevant media contacts.
  • Basic photography and video skills
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, other software packages, such as Mailchimp and Canva
  • Experience promoting cultural events
  • Understanding of UK General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)
  • Knowledge of SEO

Terms and Conditions:

  • Annual leave entitlement of 25 days holiday as per museum policy, plusBank Holidays.
  • This is a full-time, in-person role based at The National Museum of Computing, Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes.
  • Flexibility to work some weekends and occasional evenings will be required.
