Job summary

Centrica Energy is seeking a Market Risk Manager to lead market risk oversight for gas, power and renewables. You will liaise with front office and business units to enhance risk measurement methodologies and govern risk controls.

The role requires strong knowledge of energy markets, quant modelling, and a track record in managing junior staff, with London-based work and occasional travel to other Centrica offices.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of physical and financial energy market fundamentals and traded instruments, ideally power and gas.
• Excellent knowledge of risk management methods and techniques, including Value at Risk, Stress Testing and Option Pricing
• Experience in managing junior resources
• Strong commercial awareness, able to articulate deals to the Head of Market Risk and Front Office
• Proficient in booking systems such as Endur, EOS
• Practical experience in Power BI, Python and SQL
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
• Confident, resilient, with a presence and a determination to succeed in a dynamic and demanding business environment
• Proactive with a drive for continuous improvement
• Strong communication skills at all levels.

Responsibilities

• Lead the market risk oversight of one of the energy trading desks, responsible for executing market risk management strategies across gas, power, and renewables.
• Promote risk discussion on the trading floor and build best practice within the team.
• Maintain knowledge of trading portfolios and monitor developments in energy markets and impact on risk.
• Quantitatively analyse new deals and identify embedded risks using simulation-based modelling.
• Work with business teams to formulate new business and product frameworks and integrate changes into policies and systems.
• Deliver improvements to market risk processes, models and methodologies (VaR, stress testing, risk-adjusted return).
• Support the digitisation of Market Risk at Centrica Energy.

About your role:

The Market Risk Manager will play a key role in controlling and reporting risk and continuously developing the function as Centrica Energy grows and transitions to a multi-location trading model. The role will play an important part in the improvement and development of risk measurement methodologies, processes and procedures whilst having close daily interaction with the front office and business units. The role reports into the Head of Market Risk.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and experienced Market Risk professional to be part of an organisation that is focused on maximizing profit from trading gas, power, LNG and Renewables and also functions as intermediary delivering energy from our Upstream and Power Generation teams on one side and British Gas on the other.

Location:

The role is based out of our central London office (close to Marble Arch) with 3 days per week based within the office. There is also a requirement for occasional international travel to other Centrica Energy offices.

What you'll be doing:

• Lead the market risk oversight of one of the energy trading desks, being responsible for executing market risk management strategies across gas, power and renewables, creating a strong market risk presence and building strong relationship across Centrica Energy trading business

• Promote risk discussion on the trading floor, and building best practice within the team

• Maintain and share a strong knowledge of trading portfolios, and keep abreast of developments in the energy markets and the potential impact on risk and portfolios

• Quantitatively analyse new deals and identify embedded risks using simulation based modelling and other methods

• Work with relevant business teams to formulate new business and product frameworks, and integrate changes into the current policies, processes and systems

• Deliver improvements to market risk processes, models and methodologies. Including in the space of VaR, stress testing, assessment of risk adjusted return, etc

• Support the digitisation of Market Risk at Centrica Energy.

We have a few must-haves:

• Strong knowledge of physical and financial energy market fundamentals and traded instruments, ideally power and gas

• Excellent knowledge of risk management methods and techniques, including Value at Risk, Stress Testing and Option Pricing

• Experience in managing junior resources

• Strong commercial awareness, capable of articulating complex deals and providing constructive advice to the Head of Market Risk and Front Office

• Ideally proficient in booking systems such as Endur, EOS

• Practical experience in Power BI, Python and SQL

• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills

• Confident, resilient, with a presence and a determination to succeed in a dynamic and demanding business environment

• Proactive with a drive for continuous improvement

• Strong communication skills at all levels.
