Job summary

MBDA UK Ltd is seeking a Maritime Safety Group Lead to manage the delivery of safety engineering outputs across multiple Weapon System projects. You will develop about 10 safety engineers to ensure on-time, on-cost deliveries, supported by senior leads and a Maritime Safety Technical Specialist.

This hybrid role blends leadership with hands-on safety work. You will liaise with design engineers and customers to ensure hazard analyses and safety cases are produced to satisfy requirements, while

• Experience generating Safety Case Reports and supporting analyses.
• Proven ability to integrate safety eval with systems engineering certification.

Salary

Circa £70,000 depending on experience

The opportunity

This is an excellent opportunity to join the Safety and Reliability Engineering Department as we build our team, our processes and our capabilities to respond to current and future product design and assurance needs that embrace rapid development and digital transformation. A vacancy is available for a Maritime Safety Group Lead to manage the delivery of safety engineering outputs across multiple Weapon System projects. You will be responsible for developing approximately 10 safety engineers with varying levels of experience to ensure project deliveries are achieved on-time, on-cost and on-quality. Supported by other Group Leads, Technical Experts and a Maritime Safety Technical Specialist this role requires a strong systems safety certification background to diversify, challenge, and complement the existing team structure. Working within a matrix organisation structure, you will be accountable to the Weapon System Chief Systems Engineer of each project and the Department Head of Safety and Reliability.

The Role

Within the Maritime Safety Group Lead team and independently, your role will involve liaising with design engineers, project controllers, customers and other stakeholders to ensure on-time delivery of high-quality Hazard Analyses, Safety Case Reports and other safety engineering outputs, including your own. Approximately 50% of the role is people management and function improvement. You will play a crucial role in re-shaping department delivery of a safety engineering capability. The remaining 50% will be your own technical safety output. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer to exploit their leadership skills to influence the safety aspects of technically sophisticated and exciting products using a range of techniques and approaches.

By understanding the system and its operating context, you will decide what type of evidence will most cost-effectively show that the identified hazards have been mitigated to the customer's satisfaction. This role is about balancing time and cost constraints to ensure that a convincing safety case, comprising appropriate evidence, is constructed.

What are we looking for?

• Ability to generate and deliver Safety Case Reports and the supporting information (Hazard Analysis, Functional Failure Analysis, FTA, etc) to show that the identified hazards have been mitigated to the customer's satisfaction.
• Thorough understanding and experience of how safety evaluation processes integrate with a systems engineering product certification process.
• Track record as an effective team leader with strong interpersonal and influencing skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary / multi-national team, both within MBDA and with our customers.
• A passion for developing others to ensure that as a team you are adequately staffed across each project, and that engineers are available to work on tasks that best match their skill sets and skill levels.
• Demonstrable knowledge of, and experience in, the application of UK and International safety and system engineering processes, especially Def Stan 00-056.
• Highly adaptable and organised individual good at planning workloads and delegating tasks.
