About the programme

As a Graduate Marine Structures Engineer at Babcock, you will embark on a two-year rotation through some of the most complex engineering projects in the world today. You will be at the centre of defining your path through the programme, identifying those placements that suit your career ambitions, guided by a professional mentor, and supported by the early careers team every step of the way.

As part of this programme, we encourage mobility across our sectors to give you a broader experience and wider exposure to our business.

Marine Structures at Babcock

You’ll work on a wide array of activities, from cutting-edge naval projects to commercial vessels and advanced maritime platforms.

Our previous graduates have contributed to a diverse range of exciting initiatives, from decommissioning submarines to supporting small boats and developing unmanned surface vessel solutions. They have even been involved in next-generation submarine pre-concept engineering.

Working within multi-disciplined teams, you’ll take on responsibilities that include:

  1. Performing structural assessments using hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  2. Designing and assessing platform structures for explosive shock survivability.
  3. Conducting platform surveys and validation exercises.
  4. Participating in technical investigations, feasibility studies, and trials.
  5. Managing and assessing structural defects and safety certifications.
  6. Supporting future platform projects and contributing to capability upgrades.

You’ll also gain practical experience using industry-standard software such as Ansys, MathCAD, and AutoCAD, while developing a strong foundation in platform structures, including pressure hull collapse theory and engineering standards.

To support your development, you’ll receive personalised mentorship and one-to-one guidance to help you refine your skills and work towards chartership.

What you’ll need

  1. A BEng/MEng degree in a STEM discipline such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil & Structural Engineering, Material Sciences, Mathematics, or Naval Architecture.
  2. A genuine interest in engineering and marine platforms.
  3. Strong analytical skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
  4. Many of our early careers roles are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which may impact your eligibility based on place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency. Places on our Marine Structures Graduate Programme for Autumn 2025 are available in Bristol. We ask our graduates to be flexible as there is the potential to undertake placements in other locations during their programme.
