Job summary

Forth Ports is seeking a proactive Marine Manager for the Port of Leith, overseeing marine movements across Leith, Newhaven and Granton. The role requires leadership of the Marine team, ensuring safe vessel transit and regulatory compliance while working with FTNS and port partners.

You will manage staff, respond to emergencies, coordinate with port operations, and travel to Grangemouth and other ports as needed to support operations and projects.

Qualifications

  • Senior seagoing or port experience with appropriate certification
  • Merchant Navy COP or equivalent qualification or Royal Navy/HM certificate
  • Proven project management experience in a port/marine environment
  • Knowledge of Port Marine Safety Code and local byelaws
  • Valid full UK driving licence and UK working rights

Job Title: Marine Manager

Location: Port of Leith - with travel to Grangemouth & other Scottish ports

Hours: 35 hour contract – Monday-Thursday 0900-1700, Friday 0900-1600 with some flexibility

Compensation: £50,000-£55,000

About the role

As Marine Manager, you will lead the day to day management of the Marine team at the Port of Leith, ensuring the safe and efficient movement of vessels across Leith, Newhaven and Granton. Working closely with Port Operations and Forth and Tay Navigation Service (FTNS), you will plan, coordinate and oversee marine activities, ensuring all shipping movements are conducted safely, efficiently and in full compliance with relevant legislation, harbour authority requirements and Company policies.

Key responsibilities:

  • Manage the day to day Marine operations at the Port of Leith, Newhaven and Granton and their defined seaward approaches
  • Working with Leith Operations, ensure that proposed vessel locations and arrival times are within Marine Guidelines, having due regard to weather conditions, tides, size and nature of vessel and communicate primarily with FTNS but also as required agents, pilots and shipmasters, on a continually operating schedule to produce the safe and orderly transit of vessels. Work with FTNS on cruise vessel calls to Leith and to Newhaven
  • Attend meetings with port users, local stakeholders and customers as required
  • Managing Marine staff and Marine assets to ensure safe and efficient operation
  • First responder and on scene commander for oil spill and emergency situations within your area
  • Manage 3rd party Marine contractors working within your area of responsibility ensuring all RAMs are reviewed and approved
  • Working with Conservancy teams, ensure depths of water are maintained at the required depths, Ruling depths are published and safe UKC maintained
  • Assist Harbour Master and carry out any tasks delegated
  • Ensure all PMSC Procedures and Risk Assessments are reviewed in line with standards set
  • Notify HM of any non-standard marine matters as per Marine Safety Code
  • Maintain Emergency Plans, plan and conduct drills/exercises. Play an active role in the emergency management team as defined within the Port and Marine emergency plans
  • Working with CHM and Port management on the marine element of any project work
  • Be part of and assist wider Forth Ports Scotland Marine Management Team as required
  • Conduct marine accident and near miss investigations on behalf of the Harbour Master for port of Leith, Newhaven and Granton and associated estuary approaches
  • Working through peak workloads and high volumes of traffic.
  • The coverage required is normally day work however due to the nature of ports there may be a requirement from time to time to work weekends or evenings, especially in the event of an emergency
  • Ensure that all equipment is maintained to the required statutory standards, functioning correctly and then managing to work with / through the problem whilst reporting equipment malfunctions
  • Assisting the central marine team in reviewing and updating risk assessments and procedures as required for the area of jurisdiction of the Leith, Newhaven and Granton
  • Where necessary, in the event of unplanned sickness absence, may be required to provide cover at other Ports in Forth and Tay
  • Reporting of equipment failure to appropriate engineer/technician
  • Carrying out face to face audits with internal and external parties in order to monitor compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code
  • General administrative duties associated with daily operations, such as Port regulations, filing, e-mail monitoring, vessel scheduling
  • The job holder will be given tasks and duties by the HM but will be expected to work largely unsupervised
  • The Job Holder will be expected to be able to make decisions based on the circumstances and facts of the case in the interests of safety and operational efficiency
  • The Job Holder will be encouraged and expected to take a proactive view on the day-to-day management of the Port of Leith, Newhaven and Granton and work with the HM and the wider Marine Team on continuous development of the safety and Operational aspects of the Port

What we're looking for:

We are looking for a proactive and collaborative marine professional who can confidently balance safety, operational efficiency and customer service in a busy port environment. You will be an effective leader with strong decision-making skills, capable of building positive relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders and providing clear direction to teams in both routine and emergency situations. With a hands‑on approach and a commitment to continuous improvement, you will be comfortable working across multiple priorities and adapting to changing operational demands.

The successful candidate will be able to travel regularly to Grangemouth, typically a couple of times per week, and may also be required to visit other ports across our Scottish operations from time to time to support projects, provide operational cover or collaborate with the wider Marine management team.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Suitable senior seagoing or Port experience along with Merchant Navy Certificate of Competency (deck or engineer), or equivalent qualification such as HM Certificate or Royal Navy certificate, or degree level education with suitable professional qualifications
  • Experience of managing people and working with different teams of people
  • Experience of project management in a Port/Marine environment
  • Knowledge of Port Marine Safety Code
  • Understand Port and River Byelaws, General Directions, and other relevant information
  • Full Driving Licence, valid in the UK
  • Full UK Working Rights
