Job Description: Underwriter
As an Underwriter, you will be responsible for delivering a profitable underwriting service to your clients. Your key tasks include:
- Underwriting business within the agreed business plan and individual authority;
- Supporting the business planning and forecasting process;
- Monitoring financial exposure within outlined limits;
- Monitoring premium income to ensure it remains within set limits;
- Maintaining awareness of all claims advised while supporting and providing input on settlement of claims;
- Ensuring adequate reinsurance is acquired to cover specific risks;
- Building and maintaining relationships with brokers and clients;
- Supporting the design and structure of risks.

What will your essential responsibilities include?
- Reviewing submissions including applications, policy wording, inspection reports, loss runs, and financial reports, conducting research to determine the risk level for each account;
- Calculating appropriate risk premiums considering risk costs, reinsurance cessions, and underwriting and administrative costs to ensure profitability;
- Advising, assisting, servicing, and following up with clients on insurance and risk management matters to ensure satisfaction;
- Managing relationships to identify cross-selling opportunities and ensure account retention;
- Implementing new and renewed accounts promptly according to quality standards;
- Determining suitable reinsurance arrangements with internal teams, on excess of loss and quota share basis;
- Reviewing loss control reports and managing policy endorsements for necessary changes;
- Supporting business planning and forecasting, monitoring financial exposure and premium income;
- Monitoring claims and supporting claim settlement processes.
Qualifications and Skills
We’re looking for someone with:
- Experience in Marine Cargo underwriting with functional knowledge and skills of a fully competent practitioner;
- Knowledge of the Marine Insurance Industry and commercial acumen, preferably with Lloyds and global market exposure;
- Analytical, negotiation, and sales/marketing skills;
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with a strong customer service focus;
- Interpersonal skills to build and maintain contacts with insureds and brokers;
- Ability to develop business processes, strategy, and planning;
- A collaborative team player who offers creative solutions and ideas.
