Job summary

QinetiQ Limited in Gosport is seeking a Manufacturing Technician to support the manufacture, assembly and finishing of hydrodynamic engineering models and propulsion solutions. You will work with composite, metallic, polymeric and timber-based materials in a multi-disciplinary environment to deliver high-quality products on schedule.

The role requires practical workshop experience, reading engineering drawings and safe operation of tools.

Qualifications

• Practical manufacturing experience in workshop/production settings.
• Experience with composite materials and related processes.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and manufacturing instructions.
• Safely using hand/power tools and workshop machinery.
• Detail-oriented with ability to meet tolerances and quality standards.
• Experience in marine, aerospace, defence, automotive or R&D environments is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Manufacture, assemble and finish composite and non-composite components from drawings and work instructions.
• Support production of research models, tooling and test articles to defined quality and dimensional requirements.
• Work with materials including GRP, carbon fibre, timber, plastics and metals.
• Safely operate hand tools, power tools and workshop machinery.
• Prepare materials, moulds, tooling and equipment for manufacture.
• Carry out dimensional inspection and verification using standard measuring equipment.

The Role

As a Manufacturing Technician, you will support the manufacture, assembly and finishing of high-quality hydrodynamic engineering models and propulsion solutions, tooling, prototypes, research models and test articles using a range of composite, metallic, polymeric and timber-based materials.

Day-to-day, you’ll work within a multi-disciplinary engineering and manufacturing environment, you will contribute to the delivery of customer programmes through safe, efficient and high-quality manufacturing activities, supporting the production of bespoke and low-volume products to demanding quality, dimensional and schedule requirements.

You will work closely with engineers, designers and technical specialists to manufacture components and assemblies in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications and manufacturing instructions.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Manufacturing, assembling and finishing composite and non-composite components in accordance with engineering drawings and work instructions
• Supporting production of research models, prototypes, tooling and test articles to defined quality and dimensional requirements (includes hydrodynamic models)
• Working with a range of materials including Glass fibre composites (GRP), Carbon fibre composites, Timber and engineered woods, Plastics and polymers and Metals
• Safely use hand tools, power tools and workshop machinery
• Preparing materials, moulds, tooling and equipment for manufacture
• Carrying out dimensional inspection and verification activities using standard measuring equipment

Essential experience of the Manufacturing Technician:

• Practical manufacturing experience within a workshop, engineering or production environment
• Working with composite materials and associated manufacturing processes
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, manufacturing instructions and technical documentation
• Using hand tools, power tools and workshop machinery safely and effectively
• Attention to detail and ability to work to defined tolerances and quality standards
• Experience within marine, aerospace, defence, automotive or research and development environments (desirable)

Essential qualifications for the Manufacturing Technician:

• Advanced Apprenticeship in a manufacturing, engineering or technical discipline
• NVQ Level 3 in Engineering Manufacture or equivalent
• Level 3 Engineering qualification or equivalent practical experience

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Gosport site.

Our facilities at the Haslar Marine Technology Park are state-of-the‑art, including our ocean basin rotating arm, and marine towing tank, offering an unparalleled environment for testing and refining designs. Our marine technology offers our global customers a service to deliver constrained hydrodynamic model tests of surface ships, submarines, offshore structures, and renewable energy devices.
