Job Description:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Lead Manufacturing Engineering Specialist to join our team on a hybrid-working basis. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in our manufacturing operations team, shaping the NPI / Repair strategies and requirements for DFevents, ensuring efficient production processes, adherence to quality standards, and timely project completion.
The role supports the Future Combat Air Line of Business, helping plan future manufacturing activities to deliver products on schedule, with quality and cost considerations. The successful candidate will develop and execute the Operations NPI process, Repair Definition, DFX, and Manufacturing & Repair requirement strategies, aligning with Leonardo lines of business across the UK.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing specialist input to ensure the delivery of technically sound solutions within an NPI environment.
- Leading the maturity of prototyping, focusing on technical requirements and DFX.
- Defining future requirements for products and services across the product lifecycle.
- Harmonizing Manufacturing Engineering activities across multiple UK projects.
- Leading failure investigations and prioritizing solutions using problem-solving techniques like 8D.
- Supporting decision-making and failure review boards with key data and insights.
- Monitoring external developments and disruptive technologies for potential exploitation.
- Developing manufacturing processes by researching, designing, and testing methods and equipment.
- Acting as a Manufacturing Engineering authority for product/process/technology changes.
- Leading Manufacturing Engineering sections of Manufacturing Maturity Reviews and maintaining governance.
- Advising on policy and process improvements within operations.
- Reviewing production schedules, labor, and material costs, and estimating future requirements.
- Creating reports by analyzing data and trends.
- Improving manufacturing efficiency through innovative ideas, capacity analysis, and workflow planning.
- Reviewing manufacturing documentation and risk assessments.
- Ensuring product and process quality through design and validation.
- Maintaining manufacturing data such as routings and control plans.
- Promoting best practices and knowledge sharing.
- Mentoring junior team members to develop capabilities.
- Supporting customer engagement and product roadmaps with domain expertise.
- Maintaining compliance with government regulations.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum HND in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
- Experience leading NPI, Repair Definition, DFX activities.
- Knowledge of manufacturing systems including PLM, ERP, MES, QMS/BMS.
- Experience in early product development phases (AS9145 – APQP).
- Experience with PFMEA.
- Strong influencing and negotiation skills supported by data analysis.
- Understanding of operational frameworks and cross-functional processes.
- Experience across multiple product lifecycle phases.
- Ability to review peer work and ensure implementation of actions.
- Excellent communication skills, both technical and non-technical.
- Experience with Electro Mechanical Systems and Agile methodologies.
- Background in Aerospace or Automotive sectors preferred.
Additional Skills:
- Proficiency with engineering drawings and documentation.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Good computer literacy, including MS Office.
