Job description

Manufacturing Engineer - Defence and Military Systems - Permanent

Location: South-West

Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract

A Manufacturing Engineer is required to join an international defence systems company that designs, manufactures, and supports world-leading military systems. The successful Manufacturing Engineer will report to the Head of Quality and will focus on improving the end-to-end supply chain quality performance of specific suppliers, internal products, or services.

The Manufacturing Engineer will manage supplier concerns, lead APQP activities with customers and suppliers, and conduct problem resolution and continuous improvement initiatives. The role reports directly to the Quality Manager.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Develop and own specific elements of the quality improvement roadmap.
  2. Support the implementation and maintenance of systems and procedures.
  3. Ensure compliance with AS9100/ISO9001 standards and requirements.
  4. Lead specific quality improvement programs.
  5. Utilize KPI analysis, FMEA, and other tools for process improvement.
  6. Generate and review supplier quality performance metrics for senior management.
  7. Support production quality plans for new product introductions.
  8. Map and review processes, supporting the introduction of robust procedures using techniques like PFMEA and Control Plans.
  9. Prepare and submit quality approval documentation.
  10. Collaborate with supply chain, engineering, and program management teams.
  11. Approve new products and services following company procedures.
  12. Manage activities related to non-conforming product incidents and root cause analysis.
  13. Ensure supply chain compliance with QMS.
  14. Participate in supplier visits and audits.
  15. Use R&R studies and SPC for ongoing process improvements.
  16. Support design reviews and cost estimation activities.
  17. Assist with off-site visits and manufacturing activities as needed.
  18. Achieve annual objectives set by the manager.
  19. Supervise subcontract manufacturing engineering activities and inspection priorities.
  20. Manage gauge calibration processes.
  21. Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience:

  1. HNC/Degree in Engineering or related field, or equivalent.
  2. Experience in manufacturing or supply chain quality environments, preferably in high-volume manufacturing.
  3. Experience with quality improvement programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
  4. Proficiency with APQP tools, PFMEA, Control Plans, and FAI reports.
  5. Knowledge of statistical tools such as 8D, 5 Why, Six Sigma.
  6. Familiarity with AS9100 and ISO9001 standards.
  7. Strong communication skills and ability to influence others.
  8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  9. Eligibility for SC security clearance.
  10. Experience with new product development and introduction is desirable.
  11. Knowledge of ITAR, UK export legislation, and ERP/MRP systems.
  12. Optional knowledge of TS 16949 and ISO14001 standards.
