Job summary

Aspion Search is seeking a Manufacturing Design Engineer to join an established engineering organisation delivering major UK and international projects. You will create and modify machinery designs in a manufacturing setting, using SolidWorks to build 3D models and detailed drawings, and manage BOMs within a PDM system.

Work closely with workshop technicians to resolve build queries, drive manufacturability improvements and ensure robust engineering data is maintained.

Qualifications

• Experience with SolidWorks 3D modelling, assemblies and drawings.
• Experience using PDM/PLM for data management and legacy data migration.
• Engineering change control and revision management within manufacturing.

The Role of the Manufacturing Design Engineer

They are looking for a Manufacturing Design Engineer with a manufacturing background and excellent SolidWorks CAD experience.

The Manufacturing Design Engineer will act as the vital link between design, engineering documentation and the workshop, ensuring CAD models, drawings and Bills of Materials are accurate, correctly structured and suitable for manufacture.

The role will involve configuring and modifying existing mechanical equipment within a manufacturing environment, managing engineering changes and revision control, and maintaining accurate BOMs and engineering data within PDM systems.

You will also review and validate existing and legacy CAD models, implement practical design improvements and work directly with Workshop Technicians to resolve build-related queries, improving manufacturability, reliability, maintainability and assembly efficiency.

Ideally, the Manufacturing Design Engineer will have experience within machinery manufacturing, machining, oil and gas, aerospace or a similar engineering environment.

It would also be advantageous for the Manufacturing Design Engineer to have experience with PDM or PLM systems, engineering change processes, BS 8888, GD&T, Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement.

Responsibilities of the Manufacturing Design Engineer

• Develop and maintain accurate 3D CAD models, components and assemblies using SolidWorks.
• Produce detailed engineering drawings for manufacturing, fabrication and assembly.
• Review and update existing CAD models and drawings, ensuring all components have accurate supporting documentation.
• Identify and implement practical design improvements to enhance manufacturability, reliability and assembly efficiency.
• Create, update and manage engineering and manufacturing Bills of Materials (BOMs).
• Design sheet metal components and produce detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Work closely with Workshop Technicians during equipment builds, providing technical guidance and resolving engineering queries.
• Prepare clear assembly instructions, work instructions and supporting engineering documentation.
• Configure and modify existing mechanical equipment and assemblies to meet manufacturing and project requirements.
• Manage engineering changes and revision control, ensuring all CAD models, drawings, BOMs and supporting documentation are accurate and up to date.
• Maintain and manage engineering data within PDM systems, ensuring accurate BOM structures, component information and drawing revisions.
• Support Design for Manufacture (DFM) and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain accurate CAD models, drawings and BOMs within the Product Data Management (PDM) system.
• Review and validate CAD assemblies before release, ensuring correct part numbering, assembly structures, component properties and revision status.
• Collaborate with Design, Production, Purchasing and Workshop teams to support projects throughout the product lifecycle.

Requirements of the Manufacturing Design Engineer

• Manufacturing / Production Engineering experience
• Engineering Degree, HNC/HND or equivalent engineering qualification
• Over 3 year’s engineering experience
• SolidWorks - 3D modelling, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings
• SolidWorks PDM experience, including managing and migrating legacy drawings/data
• Experience creating, editing, and improving engineering drawings
• Experience identifying and implementing manufacturing/design improvements
• Proven experience managing engineering changes and revision control within a manufacturing environment.
• Experience creating, maintaining and managing engineering Bills of Materials (BOMs) and engineering data within PDM systems.
• Experience configuring, modifying and updating existing mechanical equipment and assemblies to meet manufacturing requirements.
• Practical understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes and how engineering changes impact production and assembly.
• Engineering documentation and drawing control experience
• Experience working directly with workshop technicians and supporting manufacturing teams
• Good understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes, fabrication, and mechanical assemblies
• Good understanding of machining, fabrication, welding or mechanical assembly processes.
• A manufacturing engineering mindset with a practical understanding of how equipment is built
• The confidence to communicate directly with Workshop Technicians and resolve build-related queries.
• Excellent attention to detail, problem solving and organisational skills
• Existing right to work in the UK
• Experience with special purpose machinery, industrial equipment, machining, fabrication or welding (desired)
