Abacus Careers are pleased to be working closely with one of Northern Irelands 'Big 4' Banks as they enter the local market to appoint a suitable professional to the position of 'Credit Manager'. This is a new role created due to internal promotion. At this time we are keen to engage and discuss this opportunity with either Experienced Business/Corporate Bankers or Corporate Finance Managers (Qualified Accountants from medium to large firms).

This is a superb opportunity to work with an elite team of experienced professionals that ultimately oversee and sign off on all the credit applications made to the bank. This is a highly responsible and visible role for a seasoned professional that is confident in their abilities both technical and interpersonal.

The successful candidate will join (arguably) the most well-recogised and highest-profile banking institution at its Belfast HQ.

The job -

This job involves analysing sustainability-led applications to support customers in their transition strategies, developing expert credit skills covering all customers across a range of sectors, specialist knowledge in key segments, and engaging commercially with 1st line colleagues to provide value-adding input and challenge thereby contributing to growth objectives while managing risk.

Other key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, identifying key portfolio issues, improvement opportunities and (co)implementing change management initiatives, along with scoping of and delivering on training needs of both Credit and 1st line colleagues. You will be expected from time to time to deputise for the Senior Manager and/or co-present cases with Head of Credit UK in forums with Group Credit. The role may also require capabilities in the management of customers experiencing financial difficulty within the C&B Special Credits unit.

What skills / qualifications will you need?


  • You’ll be a financial professional or an experienced Credit Manager within a Corporate Banking/Finance environment who is comfortable interacting and negotiating with Senior Corporate & Business Relationship Managers.
  • You’ll have experience, either in a Banking or Finance environment, of dealing with customers and businesses based in NI and the rest of the UK, from a variety of sectors, which may include but not limited to trading businesses with UK and international interests, housing associations, operators in the renewables sector, commercial real estate operators etc.
  • You will have proven ability to accept accountability for making logical and well-balanced decisions whilst working under pressure, within time constraints and with complex data.
You’ll also:
  • Be able to demonstrate strong customer and business focus to support our leading Customer Satisfaction position and ongoing customer experience focus. Commerciality will be a key trait.
  • Possess extensive general product knowledge of core lending facilities, and ancillary lines.
  • Have well developed influencing skills, presenting analysis supporting findings and underpinning your recommendations.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills in Credit decision forum / risk committee settings and also in a digitalised environment.
  • Have experience building successful working relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Have an appreciation of market position in NI, our C&B customer proposition, and our values.
  • Demonstrate experience contributing to cross-functional change management initiatives in a highly dynamic environment.
  • Have over 5 years’ experience in a related role ideally with a business degree or equivalent and/or relevant post-graduate ACA, ACCA, CIMA, MBA, Institute of Bankers qualifications.
  • Ideally have developed profile in the NI Corporate Banking market and have a network of contacts in intermediaries with whom the Bank and / or its customers interact.
