The Shipping Team is a stand-alone profit centre and service provider for ocean freight services within Anglo American Marketing.

As part of its role, Shipping is the in-house ocean freight service provider for the Marketing Business, offering services such as commercial freight provision, technical operations, safety and regulatory support, and market information. Shipping leverages Anglo American's cargo base to generate additional earnings from ocean freight activities by engaging in third-party freight activities. Using global scale and strength, the team aims to optimise marine activities and provide safe, reliable, sustainable, and competitive freight to the commodity businesses, their customers, and Shipping’s own customer base.

Purpose

Responsible for leading and executing the physical freight chartering strategy and the scheduling and operations activities associated with the minor bulk portion of the Anglo American Shipping portfolio in the Atlantic Region.

Key Tasks

Leadership

  • Manage and support the development of direct reports and ensure team achievement of business targets.
  • Foster cross-commodity collaboration within the Marketing BU.
  • Lead by example to embed marketing behaviors.

Commercial Operations – Minor Bulk (Atlantic)

  • Conduct short-term and spot chartering for dry bulk freight activities, adhering to policies.
  • Manage daily dry bulk vessel chartering on period and TCT basis.
  • Negotiate freight targets with outside counterparties.
  • Monitor freight markets and gather fixture information regularly.
  • Provide voyage calculations and market assessments using technical freight knowledge.
  • Manage parceling considerations and freight negotiations intricacies.
  • Procure third-party fixtures to complement fleet and trade.
  • Oversee vessel P&L performance and operations personnel.
  • Review all Charter Party contracts before and after fixtures.
  • Perform freight differential calculations and manage demurrage and brokerage settlements.
  • Align chartering activities with scheduling requirements.
  • Implement operational procedures for the Minor Bulk fleet.
  • Ensure compliance with flag states, regulations, ISM, and ISPS standards.
  • Monitor vessel performance and optimize routing as needed.
  • Coordinate between chartering, scheduling, and operations teams.
  • Manage compliance workflows and instructions.

Business Development

  • Secure third-party tonnage to support fleet growth in the Atlantic.
  • Assist traders with market predictions for freight sales.
  • Build networks with owners and suppliers in the Atlantic.

Governance and Risk Management

  • Maintain fixtures within the shipping system and improve processes as needed.

Customer Service

  • Collaborate with commodity teams to develop freight plans and forecasts, utilizing their expertise to increase sales.

Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Degree in a relevant field (preferred).
  • Understanding of shipping markets, commercial considerations, and contract management.
  • Experience in negotiating dry bulk freight contracts and international shipping terms.
  • Background in trading and cargo operations, report writing, and market analysis.
  • Knowledge of marketing fundamentals and ability to prioritize under pressure.
  • Strong communication skills and understanding of shipping systems, including voyage P&L and systems like Veson (desirable).
