This pivotal position reports to the Manager of Personal Safety and is suited for those passionate about creating and maintaining a safe learning and working environment for students, staff, and faculty.
There is opportunity to learn in this role. We welcome candidates with transferable skills who do not come from a traditional safety or security background and wish to grow in areas including proactive violence risk assessment, evaluating safety concerns, and establishing meaningful relationships with the campus community.
Campus Security Services is a department within the Vice President Finance and Operations portfolio that provides security, campus safety, emergency planning, parking, and motor pool services to the campus community at the University of Victoria. These services are provided 24/7/365 to ensure a safe, secure, and welcoming campus environment.
The Manager, Campus Safety and Risk Prevention, under the supervision of the Personal Safety Manager, is responsible for proactive Violence Risk assessment, initial intake, and response planning for emerging trends and incidents within the campus community. The role includes preparing presentations and materials to communicate insights and trends effectively.
This position involves establishing analysis and metrics to identify safety and security needs, handling sensitive and confidential matters, and collaborating with other departments for investigations and follow-up on complex issues involving campus members.
The incumbent will develop strategies with campus partners to engage diverse experiences with a trauma-informed approach, ensuring inclusive, equitable, and supportive safety practices.
As needed, the role includes participating in an on-call capacity due to the 24/7/365 operational nature, which may involve being reachable by phone or attending campus to resolve issues.
Requires education, training, and at least 2 years of experience related to violence risk assessment, psychology, criminal justice, or social science.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities to gain within the first 6 months include social media proficiency, relationship building, investigative tools, violence risk assessment and management training, open-source intelligence training, and awareness of campus issues and trends. First Aid and CPR certifications are also desirable.
