Job summary

Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Management Accounts Assistant to maintain financial ledgers and provide accurate support to senior finance colleagues. You will process information in line with monthly timetables to ensure department reporting is consistently achieved.

The post-holder will assist in budget preparation, generate standard reports for monitoring budgets, and provide robust variance analysis. Proficiency with Oracle and spreadsheets is expected.

Qualifications

  • Actively studying towards AAT or equivalent qualification.
  • Good level of accounting competency.
  • Experience with computerised ledgers.
  • Experience providing budgetary support to non-finance staff.
  • Experience in NHS environment with a Shared Service provider.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in preparation of annual startpoint budget proposals.
  • Generate and circulate standard reports for monitoring budget centres.
  • Provide robust variance analysis against budget and inform budget management.
  • Input budget amendments, income/expenditure accruals and adjustments to the general ledger.
  • Maintain records and audit trail of approved budgets and changes.
  • Prepare cost estimates for Managers and budget holders to inform resource decisions.
  • Discuss financial and non-financial issues with Managers and external organisations.
  • Collect data to investigate and resolve semi-complex financial queries.
  • Adapt information systems to meet user specifications.

Management Accounts Assistant

A Management Accounts Assistant will maintain the Trust's financial ledgers and assist in providing valued, accurate support and advice to senior finance colleagues.

The post-holder will process accounting information in accordance with the agreed monthly accounting timetable thereby ensuring that department reporting requirements are consistently achieved.

Main duties of the job

To assist in the preparation of annual startpoint budget proposals for Directorate in accordance with the Trust's budgeting policies.

To generate and circulate standard reports to enable the effective monitoring of actual performance of budget centres against budget.

To provide robust analysis of variances against budget, including the impact of clinical activity whereappropriate, and to inform effective management of budgets within the group

Tocalculate and input budget amendments, income and expenditure accruals and adjustments to the Trust's general ledger system thereby maintaining the integrity of financial reporting.

Tomaintain records and controls of approved budgets to provide a clear audit trail of changes both non-recurring and recurring.

To prepare cost estimates in an appropriate form and in a timely manner for use by Managers and other budget holders, which will inform decisions about the efficient use of resources, including the workforce.

To discuss a range of financial and non-financial issues with Managers, Directorate staff, external organisations and non-financially minded personnel, which may require the explanation of semi-complicated and/or contentious points.

To collect data from a variety of sources to investigate, analyse and resolve a range of semi-complex financial and non-financial queries.

To adapt information systems to meet the specifications of others.

Person Specification
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Actively studying towards AAT or equivalent qualification
KNOWLEDGE & NATURE OF EXPERIENCE
  • A good level of accounting competency gained through experience
  • Full knowledge and understanding of computerised Ledgers
  • Experience of providing accurate budgetary support to non-Finance staff
  • Experience of working in an NHS environment with a Shared Service provider
PERSONAL SKILLS / ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES
  • Must be able to communicate clearly, concisely and courteously to stakeholders at all levels
  • Competent in using spread sheets and word processing applications to be able to analyse and interpret data
  • The ability to work unsupervised and organise own workload to an agreed timetable. The ability to work under pressure and deliver work to tight deadlines
  • Fully conversant with all aspects of Oracle
  • Ability to spend majority of working time using computer including a visual display unit
  • Ability to concentrate frequently and for long periods.

  • Demonstrate alignment with the values and beliefs of the Trust
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the practices of equality and inclusion in the delivery of this role
  • Punctual and flexible across hours of work when required
