The Company

As one of the leading high street opticians and hearing care providers, established since 1938, we have over 180 optical and hearing care branches within the UK.

The business was started by Solomon Scriven, a qualified optician and pharmacist, and has grown to include branches from Hartlepool in the north to Penzance in the south, Diss in the east to Rhyl in the west. We have acquired practices and chains including Melson Wingate, Ronald Brown Opticians, and the Owl Group.

Our core focus remains providing excellent customer service and clinical excellence as we grow.

Scope and Remit of the Role

Reporting to the Group Finance Manager, you will lead the Management Accounting Team to produce monthly management accounts for various group companies. The ideal candidate has strong technical accounting knowledge, the ability to analyze complex financial data accurately, and is a natural mentor who thrives in a fast-paced environment where prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines is crucial.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Preparation of management accounts for group companies.
  2. Generate periodic financial reports, including profitability and variance analysis, and analyze product margins.
  3. Support the budgeting process to ensure timely and accurate budgets.
  4. Provide actionable insights to senior management for strategic decisions.
  5. Communicate complex financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.
  6. Lead the Management Accounting team to ensure timely recording of accruals, prepayments, and depreciation.
  7. Reconcile VAT and other balance sheet accounts.
  8. Oversee periodic group bank account reconciliations.
  9. Work with auditors during audits and support year-end reporting and statutory accounts.
  10. Monitor inventory levels, costs, and oversee stock take processes.
  11. Ensure intercompany transaction reconciliations within the group.
  12. Manage and maintain the chart of accounts.
  13. Manage the team through regular meetings and performance reviews.
  14. Drive continuous improvement in the management accounting department.
  15. Ensure adherence to company procedures and financial compliance.
  16. Assist senior finance management with ad hoc responsibilities.
Key Personnel Attributes
  • Qualified Accountant (CIMA, ACCA, or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 3 years of management accounts experience in a high-volume environment.
  • Experience leading, coaching, and developing a team.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Strong data analysis skills.
  • Self-starter with a proactive approach to challenges.
