Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Superintendent, Physical Plant, the Maintenance Worker II – Carpenter is responsible for various maintenance tasks supporting campus carpentry and construction projects, including all campus plant operations.
Essential Functions
- Maintain interior and exterior components of buildings.
- Construct cabinets, furniture, walls, countertops; install glass, floors, doors, bulletin boards, and similar items.
- Repair and install doors, locks, maintain key inventory, and perform lock picking as necessary.
- Repair walls, furniture, and cabinets; perform welding repairs if needed.
- Assist in materials management: determine needed materials, calculate costs, order, and record materials and costs.
- Manage inventory, order and maintain carpentry tools, and perform routine maintenance.

Marginal Functions
- Assist with maintenance of custodial and maintenance equipment.
- Provide assistance during inclement weather, including snow removal.
- Help install concrete, including site preparation and operating equipment like jackhammers.
- Assist with general building and grounds maintenance, including carpentry, painting, and vehicle maintenance.
- Perform other duties as assigned across divisions or programs, working varied schedules and locations as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to follow instructions related to hazardous materials.
- Proficiency in transporting and using ladders, boom trucks, and operating equipment like trucks, tractors, forklifts, and power tools.
- Effective communication with diverse groups.
- Teamwork skills following college practices and policies.
- Knowledge of safe lifting/moving techniques and ability to use power tools for carpentry.
- Effective written, verbal, and phone communication skills.
- Basic computer skills.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, lift weights, bend, reach, climb ladders, and work in extreme conditions, with or without accommodations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED with vocational/on-the-job training.
- At least 5 years in carpentry or 3 years with an associate degree in related fields.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to qualify for auto insurance.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in commercial construction.
- Experience reading blueprints and managing construction projects of various sizes.
