Job description

Are you a multi-skilled trades/handyperson looking for your next career move?

You will be a member of a multi-skilled estates team with the primary role of optimising the quality and condition of our properties to ensure buildings are kept in a safe condition. You'll be maintaining a high level of quality across our sites, with expertise in the safe use of hand tools such as power drills, pliers, paper strippers and a variety of other tools used in plumbing and carpentry.

With your excellent understanding of building mechanisms including electrical, plumbing, plant safety systems and equipment, you'll be providing first and immediate response to fault finding, whilst maximizing quality and cost effectiveness whilst ensuring prevention of major damage.

This role requires participation in a 24/7 on call rota currently 1 week in every 6. Overtime rates will be paid for call outs during this period in addition to an on-call allowance of 4.5% of your salary per annum/pro rata.

Applicants must have a full valid driving licence and have access to a vehicle for work. Adjustments can be considered in line with the Equality Act 2010 where required.

Main duties of the job
  • Maintenance tasks on numerous inpatient & outpatient hospitals, wards & associated buildings/sites - with a customer focus.
  • Health & safety considerations & compliance with all activities.
  • Sympathetic & tactful towards inpatients & service users.
  • Reactive maintenance tasks including building fabric, fixtures & fittings, basic carpentry, plumbing & basic electrical.
  • Planned preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Prioritise works & procurement of materials in collaboration with estates officer.
  • Work in accordance with infection control standards.
  • Drive a trust vehicle between sites to attend jobs.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • Understand and maintain electrical distribution, safe repair of electrical installation to legal requirements, for example replacing damaged sockets, plugs, lighting and fuses.
  • Carry out general repairs and reactive maintenance.
  • Complete PPM’s.
  • Understand and maintain plumbing and drainage systems, for example repairs to WC systems, leaking taps or water testing and unblocking drains.
  • Carry out decorating and painting (internal and external).
  • Maintain grounds and external fabrication of a building, such as drainage and guttering.
  • Record and report information accurately either internally or externally.

  • Level 3 vocational qualification in carpentry, plumbing or electrical and/or equivalent relevant experience carrying out maintenance in a hospital or construction environment.
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
  • Trained in the use of hardware tools and electrical equipment.
  • Basic building knowledge.
  • Carried out maintenance and repairs in properties/construction or other environments.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in an NHS environment.
Job Aptitude and Skills
Essential criteria
  • Must be able to set and negotiate priorities and follow programme workload to meet deadlines.
  • Communicates technical issues to maintenance staff/explain technical issues to other staff.
  • Ability to work safely with no on-site supervision.
