Job summary

AWE is seeking Maintenance Technicians to keep plant and facilities operating safely and efficiently at our Aldermaston and Burghfield sites in the UK. You will perform preventative maintenance, fault finding and repairs, with opportunities to improve equipment reliability and performance.

Successful candidates will have an engineering background, a practical mindset and a willingness to learn within a highly regulated environment.

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 in an engineering discipline (as a minimum).
  • Completed engineering apprenticeship and relevant maintenance experience.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical systems.
  • Good problem-solving and fault-finding skills; ability to work safely and follow procedures.
  • Good communication and ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain plant, equipment and facilities to ensure safe, reliable operation.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and respond to faults with repairs and improvements.
  • Work with engineering teams and training will be provided for new equipment.
  • Engage in continuous improvement activities to maximise availability.

Job description

Role title: Maintenance Technicians

Closing date: 1st September 2026

Location: RG7 4PR & RG30 3RR (Aldermaston & Burghfield), located between Reading and Basingstoke with free onsite parking.

Package: £36,800 - £40,000 (depending on your suitability, qualifications & level of experience)

As a Maintenance Technician, you'll be part of a skilled and collaborative team responsible for ensuring plant, equipment and facilities operate safely, reliably and efficiently. You'll support a range of maintenance activities, including preventative maintenance, fault finding, repairs and equipment improvements, helping to maximise operational performance and availability.

Working alongside experienced engineering teams, you'll have the opportunity to develop your technical skills, gain exposure to a wide variety of equipment and systems and contribute to continuous improvement within a unique and highly regulated environment. Machine tool experience is beneficial but not essential as training and development will be provided.

What we're looking for

We're seeking motivated individuals who have a practical engineering background, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and develop.

To be successful in this role, you'll have:

  • NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline as a minimum
  • A completed engineering apprenticeship and relevant engineering/maintenance experience
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical and/or electrical systems
  • Good problem-solving and fault-finding skillsThe ability to work safely and follow maintenance procedures
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
It would be great if you also have experience in:

While not essential, the following would be advantageous:

  • Maintenance within a manufacturing, industrial, utilities, facilities or engineering environment
  • Mechanical, electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic systems
  • Planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance activities
  • Using maintenance management systems and recording maintenance activities
  • Working within Environment, Health, Safety, Security and Quality (EHSSQ) requirements
  • Supporting continuous improvement activities and equipment reliability initiatives

Due to the classified nature of the work involved, there are limited opportunities to work from home in this role. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE.
