Job summary

Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water is recruiting a Maintenance Technician - Mechanical Bias in Newport. In this field-based role you will be part of a team delivering planned maintenance on Welsh Water assets, investigating failures, and reacting to operational issues to minimise plant downtime.

The role offers a 37-hour week from Monday to Friday, a standby rota, overtime opportunities, a company vehicle and a competitive benefits package including enhanced pension contributions and 34 days’ annual leave.

Qualifications

• Recognition of Electrical/Mechanical Apprenticeship with NVQ3 or equivalent.

What you’ll be responsible for

As clean water production Maintenance Technician (mechanical bias), your responsibilities will include:

• In this field-based role, you will be part of a team working on planned activities for Welsh Water assets eg improvement projects and preventative maintenance works, as well as reacting to failures across the area.
• Investigating the nature of plant failures and carrying out scheduled planned maintenance work on all equipment relating to the Welsh Water asset base to minimise plant breakdowns.
• Carrying out like for like installations, refurbishments and assisting with commissioning equipment to specification, on time and in line with company procedures.
• Carrying out an audit of spares and materials required to complete work effectively, ordering necessary items via your supervisor or direct from supplier.
• Following company health & safety procedures - being accountable for your own health & safety and having a duty of care to your colleagues and anyone affected by the work you do.
• Dealing with sometimes difficult situations in a friendly, positive and professional manner, whilst striving for a speedy resolution.
• Updating information in various IT systems daily.Liaising with outside contractors on large capital schemes ensuring they are delivered effectively and efficiently in full compliance with Health & Safety and company procedures.
• Organising your own time, handling routine work with a minimum of supervision.
• Undertaking any other duties as required to meet the needs of the business.

About you

Essential Qualifications

• A recognised Electrical, Mechanical or Dual-Skilled Engineering Apprenticeship supported by an NVQ Level 3 qualification, equivalent City & Guilds qualification, ONC in Mechanical Engineering, or substantial relevant experience gained in a similar engineering role.
• Full UK driving licence.
• Awareness of the requirements of regulatory bodies, including the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) and Natural Resources Wales (NRW).
• Understanding of Health & Safety requirements and the importance of maintaining compliance within an operational environment.
• Practical industry experience gained following completion of an apprenticeship, with a strong commitment to Health & Safety compliance and safe working practices.
• IT literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and operational systems.
• Experience of working effectively within a team environment and building positive relationships with a range of internal stakeholders.
• Experience of analysing information, identifying potential operational issues and implementing effective solutions.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to listen, respond appropriately and work collaboratively with others.
• Ability to prioritise workloads and deliver results to tight deadlines, including in challenging operational environments.

Good to know

• Location: Multi-site mobile working, no home working.
• Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 3:30pm (37 hours per week).
• Standby: Once fully trained, you'll participate in a 7-day standby rota of approximately1 week in every 5, providing out-of-hours support to help maintain essential water services when needed.

Additional Earnings: In addition to your salary and standby payments, this role includes approximately 260 hours of planned overtime each year, providing an additional earning opportunity of up to £4,490 annually.
