An innovative research institute is seeking a Maintenance Technician with electrical bias to ensure the smooth operation of its facilities. Applications are invited for the position of Maintenance Technician (Electrical bias) at the Sainsbury Laboratory, University of Cambridge (SLCU). SLCU is a scientific research institute focusing on plant developmental biology and computational modeling of plant development. The institute has approximately 150 researchers and 30 support staff across about 12 groups.
The Maintenance Technician (Electrical bias) will be a vital part of our Facilities Team, responsible for the daily maintenance and operation of the Institute. Responsibilities include planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance tasks, as well as minor installations and modifications of building services and equipment. The team ensures the smooth functioning of the Institute's plant and services to support research activities.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys challenges, variable work, and career progression.
The successful candidate will work across various areas of the Institute, including plant rooms, laboratories, glasshouses, controlled environments, and support areas. The role requires high organization, resource management skills, and the ability to minimize disruption to research activities.
You will collaborate with the Facilities Supervisor and other Maintenance Technicians to plan and execute work, including feasibility investigations, design, and cost estimates. Flexibility to work outside normal hours in emergencies is expected.
The role demands broad electrical and mechanical engineering knowledge and excellent communication skills. Prior experience in a similar role and a recognized engineering apprenticeship (or equivalent) are essential.

This is a full-time position available immediately. The initial funding is secured until 31 December 2026.
