Job summary

Bank of England is seeking an Engineering Shift Technician for its Infrastructure Engineering team in the Debden area. This hands-on role maintains critical building systems to support 24/7 operations, covering planned, preventive, and reactive maintenance across HVAC, electrical, life safety and related systems.

The role requires City & Guilds Level 3 in engineering and IOSH Safe, with experience in IWMS and operating building services.

Qualifications

  • City & Guilds Level 3 or equivalent in engineering.
  • IOSH Operating Safely qualification.
  • Experience using IWMS planned and reactive maintenance tools, including handheld HMI devices.
  • Experience operating and maintaining HVAC, BMS, electrical, public health and life safety systems.
  • Authorised Person experience in HV or LV systems within Safe Systems of Work.

Responsibilities

Overview

Our Property department plays a key role in supporting that mission by keeping the Bank’s buildings safe, operational and effective for colleagues across a complex, high-profile estate.

About the role

As an Engineering Shift Technician in Infrastructure Engineering, you’ll help maintain the critical building systems that support the Bank’s 24/7 operations. This hands‑on role covers planned, preventative and reactive maintenance across critical, essential and non-essential systems, where reliability, safety, service and professionalism are central to everything we do.

Key responsibilities
  • Deliver planned, preventative and reactive maintenance through Planon IWMS, including accurate and timely updates via handheld HMI devices.
  • Carry out daily and periodic checks, routine maintenance and statutory testing across HVAC, BMS, electrical, public health, fire, life safety, critical assets and other building engineering systems.
  • Respond to engineering faults and failures in line with priority response and fix times, helping maintain safe environments and minimise disruption to the Bank’s operations.
  • Support specialist OEM contractors with planned maintenance, reactive tasks and emergency call‑outs.
  • Provide accurate data for daily shift handover logs, reports, incident management and recovery exercises.
  • Act as, or support, an Authorised Person for LV electrical and/or mechanical systems, working within Safe Systems of Work to support 24/7 operations.
  • Champion health and safety, ensuring work is delivered in line with agreed methods, risk assessments, service levels and customer service standards.
  • Contribute to the Bank’s collaborative, continuous improvement culture by sharing ideas, innovation and practical improvements.
  • Participate in the weekly on‑call technical support rota to support incident response, if required.
Role Requirements
Minimum criteria
  • City & Guilds Level 3, or equivalent transferable qualification, in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • IOSH Operating Safely qualification.
  • Experience using IWMS planned and reactive maintenance tools, including handheld HMI devices.
  • Experience operating and maintaining HVAC, BMS, electrical, public health and life safety systems.
  • Demonstrable Authorised Person experience in HV or LV system operation, with experience working within defined Safe Systems of Work.
  • Knowledge of statutory and compliance obligations relevant to engineering systems.
  • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures and Emergency Operating Procedures, and read complex mechanical, electrical, control and public health drawings.

Salary and Benefits Information


The salary for this role is £32,220. In addition, we also offer 8% benefits allowance with the option to take as salary or purchase a wide range of flexible benefits

We also offer a comprehensive benefits package as detailed below:

  • Currently a non-contributory, career average pension giving you a guaranteed retirement benefit of 1/80th of your annual salary for every year worked. There is the option to increase your pension (to 1/65th) or decrease (to 1/105th) in exchange for salary through our flexible benefits programme each year. The Bank has the discretion to vary standard accrual rates and dial up and dial down rates at any time and to withdraw dial up and dial down options at any time.
  • A discretionary performance award based on a current award pool.
  • 26 days’ annual leave with option to buy up to 12 additional days through flexible benefits.
