Job summary

United Utilities is seeking a Maintenance Planner for our Samlesbury site in the North West. The role focuses on safety-driven proactive maintenance planning for water treatment assets, coordinating with maintenance, scheduling and supply chain teams to ensure material and service availability.

Applicants should have deep maintenance knowledge, plant operations experience, and strong communication skills. SAP and MARS expertise, plus a UK driving licence, are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Extensive maintenance knowledge with experience estimating time and materials.
  • Familiar with plant operations and health & safety requirements.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; SAP and MARS knowledge.
  • Root cause analysis and problem solving.
  • Strong communication across technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence.
  • HNC/NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Put safety first by identifying risks and building proactive maintenance plans for assets.
  • Collaborate with maintenance, scheduling and supply chain teams to ensure materials and services are in place for planned work.
  • Review and prioritise new maintenance tasks to minimise disruption to water treatment operations.
  • Build and improve a library of job plans with input from operations and engineering teams for asset reliability.
  • Work with schedulers and planning meetings to shape executable plans from one week to a year ahead.
  • Request asset shutdowns when needed and drive continuous improvement.

What the Maintenance Planner will be doing:

  • Put safety first by identifying risks early and building proactive maintenance plans for short, medium, and long-term asset care.
  • Work closely with maintenance, scheduling, and supply chain teams to ensure the right materials and services are in place for planned work.
  • Review and prioritise new maintenance tasks, aiming to minimise disruption to water treatment operations.
  • Build and improve a library of job plans, adapting them with input from operations and engineering teams to boost asset reliability is a responsibility of the Maintenance Planner.
  • Collaborate daily with schedulers and attend planning meetings to shape executable maintenance plans from one week to a year ahead.
  • Request asset shutdowns when needed, report missed maintenance opportunities and use insights to drive continuous improvement.

What we are looking for in our Maintenance Planner:

  • Has deep maintenance knowledge and can accurately estimate time, materials, and skills needed for jobs.
  • Understands plant operations, equipment, and health & safety processes inside out.
  • Is confident using Microsoft Office and has a good grasp of SAP and MARS systems.
  • Can apply root cause and failure analysis to solve problems effectively.
  • Works well both independently and as part of a team, with strong communication skills across technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Plans work logically and efficiently, making the most of available resources.
  • Is familiar with industry safety standards and work authorisation procedures.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence.
  • Qualified to HNC/NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, or Instrumentation engineering, with hands-on experience and a strong maintenance background in the water or similar industry is required for the Maintenance Planner.
