Job summary

DS Smith is seeking an experienced maintenance engineering leader to head a site maintenance team. You will coach engineers, oversee preventive and predictive maintenance, and drive reliability improvements while maintaining high safety and audit standards.

The role requires strong leadership, hands-on engineering knowledge, and experience with maintenance planning systems. You will collaborate across operations and capital projects to sustain world-class maintenance performance.

Qualifications

• A Level 3 Engineering Apprenticeship (or higher) in a mechanical, electrical or multi-skilled discipline.
• Experience in a fast-paced manufacturing or FMCG environment.
• Proven experience leading engineering teams.
• A proactive approach to people leadership, coaching and performance management.
• Experience delivering preventative and predictive maintenance strategies.
• Knowledge of maintenance planning systems (SAP advantageous).
• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to prioritise in a busy production environment.
• Experience working collaboratively with production and cross-functional teams.
• Excellent communication and organisational skills.
• A passion for continuous improvement, reliability and developing others.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach and develop a team of maintenance engineers to high performance.
• Support the Engineering Manager and provide operational leadership in their absence.
• Plan and complete preventative, predictive and reactive maintenance activities.
• Drive Asset Care strategy to improve reliability and uptime.
• Manage maintenance activities via the site's CMMS, prioritising work.
• Create and deliver training and development plans.
• Coach performance and provide development opportunities.
• Champion health and safety culture and safe working practices.
• Lead cross-functional communication across engineering and operations.
• Monitor machine condition, investigate non-conformances and implement actions.
• Support capital projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain engineering documentation and audit compliance.
• Maintain workshop standards and engineering stores.
