Mander Portman Woodward (MPW) is an independent education provider and one of the most well-respected independent college brands in the UK.

Occupying three Georgian town houses, Head Office suite, and the recently acquired Queen’s Gate House, a building purchased by MPW in 2021 and refurbished to include a new student boarding facility, teaching rooms, offices, and an events hall.

The role:

We are seeking an organized and experienced Maintenance Team Leader to oversee a team of three in maintaining our multi-use facilities and school premises in central London. The ideal candidate will ensure the efficient operation of our premises, manage PPM schedules, oversee repairs, and coordinate with internal resources and external contractors to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for staff, students, and visitors.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead maintenance activities across Queens Gate House and three other estate buildings, including regular tasks, delegated team duties, and contractor oversight.
  • Manage larger projects and plant maintenance through established partners, overseeing contracts and ensuring quality standards.
  • Implement and monitor building management, operations, and health and safety best practices for all facility users.
  • Establish and execute PPM schedules.
  • Respond to reactive maintenance requests via Freshdesk, prioritizing accordingly.
  • Plan ongoing maintenance, improvements, and cosmetic updates.
  • Contribute to refurbishment and maintenance planning for QGH and other estate areas.
  • Provide hands-on maintenance solutions, delegate tasks, and source contractors as needed.
  • Build and maintain relationships with suppliers and contractors to resolve issues cost-effectively.
  • Focus on cost savings, waste reduction, and environmental impact minimization.
  • Coordinate with soft facilities management to unify support services such as security, cleaning, and safety.
  • Maintain accurate health and safety, maintenance, and statutory compliance records using Hansam system.
  • Stay updated with legislation related to health and safety, fire prevention, and compliance areas.
  • Ensure staff training and adherence to safety policies and customer service standards.

Building management duties:

  • Oversee maintenance and repair of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and security.
  • Coordinate with external contractors for maintenance, repairs, and renovations, ensuring quality and performance.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify safety hazards and maintenance needs.

Health & Safety responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and standards.
  • Manage safety reports and records to meet compliance requirements.
  • Implement recommendations from fire risk assessments and audits.
  • Supervise water hygiene procedures.

Perform any other reasonable duties as requested by management, including portering tasks.

You will have:

  • Proven maintenance management experience, preferably in education or commercial settings.
  • Practical repair skills; trades experience in plumbing, electrical, or carpentry is advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, and safety regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and facilities management software.
  • Facilities management certifications (e.g., CFM, FMP) and trade qualifications are desirable but not mandatory.

Workplace: MPW London, Queen’s Gate, South Kensington, London SW7

Hours: Approximately 40 hours per week, with potential flexible hours including evenings and weekends as required.
