Job Description

Maintenance Carpenter

Department: Trades & Services

Location(s): London

Salary: Starting basic salary is £42,798 for the first year automatically rising to £46,268 after one year.

Job Description

The role also attracts a technical framework allowance and disruption allowance that you’ll have the opportunity to apply for once your training is complete, and you meet the technical qualifying criteria. By your second year as a fully trained and deployable property specialist you may be able to earn £53,524, not accounting for overtime or on call payments.

Flexible working: This role is fully office based due to the nature of the work involved. Once fully qualified, some flexibility/compressed hours could be considered depending on training and business requirements.

About Us

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing, and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. A role in MI5 means you'll do unique and challenging work in a supportive and encouraging environment, making a real difference to UK national security.

The Role

As a Maintenance Carpenter, your work will encompass maintenance, repair and construction within secure facilities, including hardening of critical infrastructure and creating bespoke spaces in many different types of property. You will be responsible for creating technical drawings, selecting appropriate materials, and carrying out tasks to a high standard, all while adhering to stringent security protocols.

Another aspect of the role, and very exciting part of it, is occasionally deploying within the UK on intelligence gathering operations; utilising your trade skills to directly contribute to the security of our nation.

With our ever-changing intelligence needs there is never a dull day. This is mostly a Monday to Friday role, often with early starts but with occasional need to work later in the evening. We may also ask you to work away from home for short periods of time, along with the possibility of overseas deployments. For additional hours worked, you’ll receive overtime payments, alongside your regular pay and any specialist pay.

About You

You’ll have a City & Guilds Level 2, BTEC, NVQ or equivalent qualification in Carpentry and Joinery, and will be comfortable using hand and power tools. You’ll have a strong work ethic, meaning you will enjoy actively contributing your ideas and engaging with a range of colleagues and partners. You will have meticulous attention to detail, and commitment to delivering high quality results. You will take a proactive and adaptable approach to working on a variety of tasks, and will have sound problem-solving skills.

You will need to hold a full UK driving licence as travel to different locations at various times of the day is required. You will also be expected to maintain required levels of fitness as the job can be physical at times. Whilst your work will be primarily carpentry, you will also need basic IT literacy and report writing skills.

Training and Development

We invest in our employees and provide opportunities for professional growth and advancement. The initial training for the role will take at least 6 months. The training will consist of a combination of in-house training carried out by experienced team members, and external courses. Through this training you’ll gain the skills needed to apply your existing experience to our specialist ways of working.

You will be mentored within the team and will also have a training pathway with assessment milestones, so that you know what is expected and can follow your progress through the training process. Following on from this, we’ll support your career development with external courses to enhance your skills and stay up to date with industry best practice.

Rewards and Benefits

You’ll receive a starting salary £42,798 rising to £46,268 after the first year. The role also attracts a technical framework allowance and disruption allowance that you’ll have the opportunity to apply for once your training is complete, and you meet the technical qualifying criteria. By your second year as a fully trained and deployable Property Maintenance Specialist you may be able to earn £53,524, with overtime and on call payments increasing this further.

Other Benefits Include:

25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service Additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays

Personal Learning Budget

Excellent pension scheme

Cycle to work scheme

Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars

Paid parental and adoption leave.

Interest free season ticket loan

Two paid hours per week to maintain your fitness levels

Tools and equipment required for the role are paid for and provided
