Job description

Under general supervision of the Grounds Supervisor, the Maintenance Assistant is responsible for a variety of duties including installation and maintenance of irrigation systems, operation of grounds / heavy equipment, (e.g. mowers, tractors, backhoes) general grounds maintenance, repairs and upkeep of college facilities.

Job Description

  • Assist with application of herbicides and fertilizers.
  • Operate grounds equipment.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems.
  • Maintains, cleans and winterizes equipment.
  • Must be proficient at pruning and trimming hedges, trees, shrubs etc.
  • Performs mowing, edging and weed trimming.
  • Provides general repairs and maintenance on exterior and interior of buildings.
  • Keeps parking facilities cleaned and maintained.
  • Provides snow and ice removal during inclement weather.
  • Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
  • Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.

Rate of Pay: $16.00 per hour Hours subject to change

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of methods and practices in skilled and unskilled trades. Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on various types of grounds keeping tools and equipment. Skill in pruning and trimming hedges, trees, shrubs etc. Ability to receive, assign, and coordinate work activities.

Environmental Conditions

The position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to work during different weather climates; to include hot/cold weather, rain, etc. Must possess mobility to work in and around buildings and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of sufficient education or training to read and write; plus one year of experience or on-the-job training performing grounds keeping and/ or maintaining lawn-care equipment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have a safe driving record.
  • Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.
  • OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/ OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPORVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
