Macmillan Highly Specialist SLT – Outreach/ Acute HNC service

The Speech & Language Therapist (SLT) post holder has responsibility for providing a highly specialist SLT service to Ear, Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Services. This includes Oro-maxillofacial surgery (OMFS), Head & Neck Oncology, Palliative Oncological Care. They will be linked with the Macmillan Cancer Services, and will see in-patients and out-patients in St. George's Hospital Healthcare NHS Trust in consultation with Line Manager. These clients will have complex needs and a significant proportion of them will have English as an additional language (EAL).

The post holder will be expected to lead collaborative working with patients/clients, carers and with colleagues in Health, the voluntary sector.

Main duties of the job

This role is key in providing the following to the Head and neck outreach and Inpatient service;

  • overseeing clinical caseload allocation for the whole team to ensure timely assessment of new/current patients
  • Sole handling of the SLT HNC outreach patient caseload from referral+ triage to assessment and management
  • ensuring safe management and timely rehabilitation of complex post surgical and airway patients within MDT setting
  • overseeing clinical treatment plans to ensure provision of evidence and goal based therapy
  • commencing discharge planning alongside MDT to ensure the SLT team proactively contributes to maintaining flow through services
  • ensuring timely referrals for ongoing rehabilitation
  • communicating sensitive and difficult information to patients and their relatives
  • completing necessary documentation to allow for audit data sets to be completed which report on performance of the service
  • contributes to the team's capacity to deliver the required frequency and intensity of therapy as outlined in clinical guidelines and local SOP
  • monitoring staff well-being and adhering to Well-Being Action Plans
  • Supporting and training junior team members

Education/Qualifications
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree Qualification or equivalent
  • Health Professions Council - Licence to Practice
  • Masters Degree level or equivalent e.g. successful completion of short courses such as Advanced Dysphagia, Tracheostomy Management, Clinical Voice Disorders, Counselling and structured self study
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist
Experience
  • Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level
  • 4 years post qualification experience working with adult client group >2 within Head and Neck
  • Experience in Surgical Voice Restoration
  • Assessment, treatment and management of complex clients with voice, speech, language and communication difficulties
  • Training and experience in counselling clients
  • Working with clients with complex dysphagia
  • Developing and delivering education and training packages.
  • Experience of being involved in Clinical audit
  • Experience in FEES assessments - ideally 2a+
  • Competence in performing videofluoroscopic assessment
